Slightly off topic. BigB (or indeed everyone else here), are you based in the UK (London)? If so which place would you recommend for guitar set ups / retrofitting parts, etc. ?

Sorry, I'm in Bordeaux, France. FWIW, I do most of my guitar-related stuff myself, only take the guitar to the luthier for things that are either too much for me (refret job) or better and cheaper done by a real pro (nut filling etc).

The place that installed the pickups was Chandler Guitars in Kew (London). Come to think of it, the guy who installed them looked like an apprentice and my Les Paul is kind of unusual in that it has three pickups, so there is a chance he may have made a mistake.

Indeed.  FWIW, there are now clips of each and any BKP pups on the website, so you can hear what a BD should sound like - clean and crunch - and compare with how, say, a Mule sounds in the very same guitar and rig. The guitar used for these clips was a LP IIRC, so if your BD is correctly installed, the clip shouldn't be very far from what you get...
