Apache Set - Trying to nail that nasty DSOTM lead tone.
« on: March 10, 2011, 12:23:20 PM »

My first guitar was this Tokai Goldstar Strat, I believe it's an '88 and I bought it in '89. Was red with a white pickguard back then. It has been lying in a shed somewhere in Germany for 5 years and I got it back some few years ago, stripped the paint, installed a bakelite black pick guard, had it refretted and put in some BareKnuckle Apaches (calibrated set with Nickel Base Plate on the bridge). Repainted it very badly, the nitro spray paint is peeling off at places, so what, I still like the looks.

Trying to nail that huge lead tone on Time, kind of nasty distortion Gilmour uses with loads of reverb on the original. I used the Cornford and boosted it with an Xotic EP and a RetroSonic Phaser.

Here's my go at it:

I like that, great playing there hunter. I think you need to swap that phaser for a uni-vibe clone if you have one and I think it needs a little bit more hair on the distortion.

Wish I could play like that though... ####!!. ;)

Great stuff Hunter. Really good.
I think I hate being indecisive.

Thanks guys, I am chuffed everytime when I pull out the ole strat, at how good those Apaches sound, awesome pickups!

But I realise some strings go out of tune towards the end, too much pulling old stiff strings I guess ...

Never mind the old strings. Great tone there. Start to dig Apaches more and more. Thx for sharing.

Thanks Tele. I wonder how it would sound with your ITs ... a bit more output might do no harm I guess...

Really love tone there, Hunter. And the guitar got the looks alright.

I love your guitar room. Seems very small and it's filled up with gear and guitars  :D

By the way. What bass is it that partly visible in the background?

Yeah it's tiny and I am clumsy, always something breaking when I stampede through there

The bass is an Ibanez BTB. Nice bass really, has a longer scale, quite tough for a guitar player. I also got a 70s Ibanez Ric copy, which kicks ass. But I hardly play bass, maybe I should sell ...

I play IT's in my strat and they crunch/drive very nice, but I doubt if they sound as fat/round as Apaches.
