To be fair to Mustaine himself (not that it's him making this claim!), except during his most egomaniacal phases, he's bigged up his rhythm playing but he's been quite modest about his soloing skills.  And (again, most of the time) he's been full of praise for his lead guitarists.

I'm actually quite fond of his lead playing in most cases its not overly complex or utter w**kery and always fits the songs perfectly.

I preferred all of Dave's solos on endgame and didnt like a single one of chris'.

Oh yeah, sure. My complaint's not with mustaine (who's admittedly a pretty good rhythm guitarist, and as you say, normally gives due credit to the lead players), it's with the press.

Actually, I agree with you there.  I find Mustaine's solos a bit repetitive but at least they're appropriate to the songs.  

I'm a fan of Poland and especially Friedman.  I have no strong feelings either way about Young or Pitrelli.  But I haven't liked the playing of the last two lead guitarists (Drover and Broderick) at all - and it's spoiled my enjoyment of the last couple of albums.

Actually, I agree with you there.  I find Mustaine's solos a bit repetitive but at least they're appropriate to the songs.

I preferred Drover to broderick for the original solos, but Broderick is great at playing all the old school ones.

I do however love Drovers work with Eidolon & King Diamond it's a lot more creative than what he did in megadeth.

Any list with Black Sabbath and Electric Wizard is OK by me.

One track I never see on these kinds of lists is Ministry's "N.W.O." the first track on the ΚΕΦΑΛΗΞΘ album. To my ears the intro is amongst the heaviest things ever recorded; a full on aural assault. I love it.

For the most part I think that's pretty sound thinking. The do tend to be more "dense" than other genres.

Oddly enough, they're the only "extreme" metal sub-genres I find fairly listenable.

Whilst I do think doom tends to be "heavier" than everything else, two of my three favourite albums on their are black metal smash-ups of sorts, Eater of Birds and The Codex Necro. Both utterly horrible works.

Well that's not true, they ARE playing riffs. They're just really, really, really slow ones. But it's structured. You can't sit it alongside, say, Merzbow.
