too many pickups... (Metal question)
« on: March 23, 2011, 12:11:01 AM »
Hi I'm new to the forum!
I've been lurking around for some time but I can't find what I'm looking for.

I'm building myself a guitar. It's made from mahogany, maple neck ebony fretboard. I want to put a single humbucker in the bridge and am confused as to which one to put in.

I presently have an RR5 (alder body, neck thru, rosewood fretboard) with stock pickup (JB SH-4) in the bridge playing through a 6505+ and love my sound. I would like maybe a little more clarity and tightness.
I play in dropped A# tuning. Think of style like Amon Amarth, Necrophagist, The Black Dahlia Murder, Jeff Loomis' stuff.
I am mostly a rhythm player. (even though I feel like practicing more lead stuff these days)

Of course I tought of the Ceramic Warpig, I'm just kinda scared of the high output (since I hate EMG-81's sound, and yes I know some aforementioned bands use 'em - was talking about the style, not sound)

SO
In a single humbucker guitar, playing tech/melo death metal, playing mostly rhythm with solos thrown here and there. Which pickup would you put in?

SORRY ABOUT LONG POST AND THANKS A LOT FOR READING AND REPLYING!!! \m/

Nailbomb would do great death metal in a mahogany guitar. The alnico-version is really versatile and sounds organic. For a tighter sound there is a ceramic version.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

i may be coming out of the blue with this, but i have an 8 string with mahogany set neck and body and an ebony fretboard. i play really heavy but use a booster pedal in front of my amp for metal OD. Riff Raff would be my call. it's nice and clear, and since it's a bit cooler, has less bass but still has the organicness of alnico.

My BK's:
Black Dog8-Riff Raff8 / Black Dog7-Mule7
C-Bomb Set / Blackhawk Bridge
Holydiver Set/ BG50 Set

Youre telling me I have to consider vintage pickups also?!
It's been a month I'm trying to choose between the NB / Pig / MM / Painkiller
I'm not getting out of this... lol ;)

it depends i guess. i had a cold sweat in my 8 string in the bridge first and it was too fizzy and scooped. the riff raff fixed that. and it's only a neck. i swapped my RR neck to the bridge as a test and it's there 'till i can afford a new RR8 bridge.

listen to the BKP riff raff metal clip. the pickup can do it. it's just a matter of taste i guess!

I find the MM does necrophagist tones quite well but believe the MM or CS could work rather well for you

hello!
your post screams ceramic nailbomb! i'd say i don't see any other option but it would be false, of course... ;) anyway if you like the JB and are looking for more tightness and clarity you can't go possibly wrong with it.
i wouldn't reccomend a ceramic warpig just because its voicing fits better in other kinds of death metal - in my opinion - but don't imagine it even slightly close to an EMG81, they sound COMPLETELY different.
Mule, MQ, Stockholm, CS, RY, MM, PK, ANB, CNB, AWP, CWP, PiG90...

too many? ;)
