What to choose in bridge!!??
« on: March 21, 2011, 05:53:41 AM »

Hi all,

starting to think its time to upgrade from my ibanez 170 cos it's literally falling to pieces (i play it a fair bit :P)

im looking at getting a new guitar, and fitting it out with bareknuckles without braking the budget.

right now, im looking at getting a Chapman ML2, basically a double humbucking single cut  all mahog body, with glued in maple neck and ebony board.

I WANT VERSATILITY IN THIS MOFO.

to look at the type of sound im want out of it, i'm just lookin at my very favourite atists, and tryin to pick a pair that will cover all bases.
My wonderful music of choice includes: Black Sabbath, lots of black sabbath
AC/DC
Gary Moore
SRV
GnR
Jimi H
Zeppelin
HUGE PINK FLOYD FAN
Red Hot Chilli Peppers
anything Ozzy Osbourne
 Dream Theatre
and many many others

I'm mainly seeing a trend of yummy fat neck postion blues and rythm work, and some hotter stuff happening in the bridge.

I'm thinking mississipi queen in the neck for all the blues goodness, but I'm rather undecided on the bridge, and Im not sure if the Queen will mix well with a full blown humbucker

in the bridge i basically want something hot, for sizzling solos and rythm when I get to metal, but the metal doesn't go much further past Sabbath, Metallica or Ozzy stuff. maybe a bit of Kyuss, mayyyybe

The Mule, Crawler, Emerald, Holy Diver and Story Monday all look alright, but I don't have any experience with bareknuckles yet, so I'm pretty much relying on Tim's descriptions

I was hoping you guys could help me out a bit with choosing the right pair of pups.

in a line, I'm after versatile neck blues, and a sizzling bridge, that still cleans up some for pink floyd, zeppelin and acca dacca.

thanks in advance for any help

I use the MQ in the neck with a miracle man bridge and it works amazingly well together as a set.

The MQ will do everything you ask and the MM will easily cover the Metallica, Ozzy, Kyuss & some of the DT

For me, without a doubt it would be a Mule in the neck as that's really perfect in that guitar. For the bridge I'm not so sure. I'm not sure the Miracle Man would be versatile enough for all the artists you mentioned so I'd guess Nailbomb or maybe Holydiver.
BKP owned:

Bridge - Emerald; Cold Sweat; Crawler; A-Bomb; Holydiver; Miracle Man; Sinner; Trilogy Suite

Neck - Emerald; Cold Sweat; Crawler; Holydiver; Sinner; Trilogy Suite

hey guys, thanks so far, you've put some more ideas into my mind
 :P
Just quickly Toe-Knee, How well does the MM clean  up with the volume pot? and i see some reviews from Total Guitar n Co where they say the Miracle Man aint as versatile as it's brethren? do you find this to be true at all?  if so what are the tones it supposedly can't cover?

thanks again.

definitely not a miracle man
the nailbomb is great for dream theater, but too hot and edgy for everything else, except modern ozzy and metallica

maybe a crawler or black dog?

For a real versatile axe with 2 humbuckers I don't think a 3-way toggle is the best choice. If at all possible I would get a 5-way, 4-level super switch. If this is not an option for that particular guitar I would at least get the coil tap option. Otherwise it will be very difficult to obtain Hendrix and Pink Floyd tones.

If you choose the coil tap solution then you should go for rather warm and strong sounding pickups. Otherwise the split sounds may be too thin. Crawlers would be a good option then as they are often suggested to PRS players looking for an upgrade.

Cheers Stephan

I just got a Mule for the neck and I love it. To me, it has blues. And when you turn the tone down the f*cker sings like there is no tomorrow, great woman tone, kinda slash esque (think sweet child o mine). Also great for Pink Floyd, Moore and Zeppelin I think. Most of the others too, thing seems very versatile.

If the Nailbomb is too edgy you might also concider my new bridge, the Rebell Yell. Lots of harmonics and character,  far as I can tell it will do any kind of rock, from AC/DC to DT, though I canīt give you a real idea of metal with my Tiny Terror.

These two are seem very versatile to me, so you might just have a look at them.

I would look at Mule or a Black Dog for the bridge. They wil do classic rock to old school metal very well.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.
