Bareknuckles Pickups for my Parker Fly Deluxe ?
« on: April 01, 2011, 08:00:24 PM »
I'd love a pair of BKP's for my Fly Deluxe but as a lot of you probably know, USA made Fly's have a unique pickup installation method which makes finding aftermarket replacements rather difficult.

So.........can/will Bareknuckles make me a set of pickups for my Fly ?
The stock Dimarzio pickups are pretty good sounding pickups but i know this already amazing guitar would sound even better with a set of BKP's installed.

I've done it before but believe me it wasn't easy

the Dimarzios fit to the body via two pole screws that are longer and go into threaded inserts in the body
To try to get it to work your BKPs would need to have a double row of screw poles (which does affect tone)

UNFORTUNATELY the BKP pole spacing isn't the same as Dimarzio's and it means the pickups sit very slightly twisted.
To get it right you'd need to remove the bushings , dowel the holes and redrill and insert the bushings slightly differently, which is more than tricky as the bushings don't want to come out and you can't get too tough on a Parker Fly

Jon, do you reckon its worth considering a rebuild & rewind in this situation.

the way i see it the bobbins and mounting bolts may need to stay, but the rest could be custom BKP.  If you could get the parker skeleton to sound like a BKP then the mounting issues become less of an issue

Yeah, that's kinda' the way i was thinking Wez.
I know there's not a lot of wood behind the pickups where the threaded inserts are so i'd be a bit worried about trying to screw anything into them at any sort of angle, however slight  :| I love my Fly to bits so i'd hate to break it.

I have heard of people having the stock pickups re-built so maybe tat would be the best and safest option. It's just a matter of how much Bareknuckles could do with the limited depth of the stock bobbins and whether they could change/beef-up the magnets.

I suppose if anyone can do it it would be Bareknuckles

The bobbins are pretty much standard depth
It's unsticking them from their plastic bases that can be the issue

BKP made me some warpigs without legs for the time we mounted them in a fly(and having covers on made things even more challenging as we had to rout out the corners of the routs on the fly.
