Warpigs In My Jackson
« on: April 10, 2011, 11:46:21 PM »
I just bought a Jackson SL2H that I planned to put alnico warpigs into.  But my Jackson sounds surprisingly dark and warm considering the woods its made of (Ebony fingerboard, Maple neckthrough, and alder wings).  My 68 reissue les paul custom actually sounds brighter than my jackson.  Would the warpigs be too much for my jackson?  Also are Jackson SL2H's normally this dark sounding?

They do have a lot of bass, but are also clear sounding pickups. That's what I read here on the forum, I don't own WP's and considering the music I play probably never will. Maybe look at Ceramic Nailbombs.

is it dark unplugged or is it when plugged in?

as it could just be the current pickups are colouring it a lot

It is dark unplugged.  When plugged it's actually pretty bright.  The current pick ups, which are seymour duncans, actually sound surprisingly good, but not as good as bare knuckles.

My SL3 sounds a lot darker than I had anticipated too, though not quite as dark as a Les Paul. Tim suggested Ceramic Nailbombs to me because of the wood so I imagine they'll work great.

What about a lundgren m6 or motor city solution in my jackson?  I know other boutique pick ups aren't mentioned as often on this forum, but the clips I've heard of the lundgren sounded incredible.

the solution sounds somewhat similar to the miracle man

if you already have warpigs, you should try them first
you might get surprised

if you didn't order them yet, then you should e-mail Tim again

warpigs aren't dark at all. they've just got a lot of punch. so don't be afraid to buy them - unless you're after a very bright tone...

Dheim, what kind of guitar do you have your warpigs in.  Is it a bright sounding guitar?
Also, Eric, I did not order warpigs yet, but it's interesting that you say the solution sounds similar to the Miracle Man.  I already have a Miracle Man in my Les Paul, so I probably don't want that in my Jackson.  How would you compare the solution to the miracle man.  Which one do you prefer?  Is your solution ceramic or alnico?  From the descriptions I've heard the solution seems like it might be brighter and more aggressive than the miracle man and maybe not as fat or saturated, but I'm only inferring since I never tried the solution.
Also, the Lundgren M6 is still on my list.

a cold sweat, painkiller or C-bomb would probably brighten it up. Cold sweats are fairly bright- though maybe not as aggressive as you want.

I'm not necessarily trying to brighten up my guitar.  I'm just worried that maybe the warpig will sound to dark or muffled.    Also, I had a Painkiller before and for me the Aftermath in the same guitar was much better and I agree that based on the clips and descriptions I heard I would want something more aggressive than the Cold Sweat.

I don't think it'll sound too too dark. I mean. I have an Ibanez saber model which has a mahogany body, maple neck and rosewood board and the tone is kind of dark but not excessively dark or too muddy. I imagine your guitar would sound even more clear and bright being that its a super strat made of alder, maple and ebony. Warpigs are kind of dark but are also clear. Muddy isn't the word to describe them so much as mass is. I doubt theyd sound muffed in your guitar if they can do well in darker woods like mahogany and rosewood. I will say that the massive sound can be tiring sometimes (well to me personally). Warpigs seem to have a really really distinct tone, and while theyre incredibly versatile, they always sound like warpigs (massive as hell).............good luck with whatever decision you make!

i've got an alnico warpig in a les paul studio - that i would describe as middy, not dark but surely not bright, a ceramic pig in a bright wenge neckthrough full of hi-mids, another c-pig in a chambered les paul studio and a c-pig ("converted" from an a-pig) in an ibanez RG...
except for the wenge neckthrough none of these guitars is particurarly bright, and bridge warpigs don't sound muffled at all. the a-pig was a bit muddy in the RG tuned in B (that's why i had it rewound to c-pig), but in E and D it sounded really good, with the right amount of bass and high end
i don't like the neck warpig because i love bright and clear necks... it sounds completely different from the bridge unit, anyway.

The Warpigs are starting to sound really promising now, but I still am considering the lundgren and maybe motor city solution, but not as much.
