As i'm an active teacher, try to keep my kids on edge and making them learn modern downtuned metal when they ask me to. i've seen so many teachers keep their lessons exclusively in 440 that i feel it's fun for them to detune and bang on some amon amarth or such.
last sunday i was bored. i strung my main teaching guitar with a bunch of single strings i had home. i should've done this before!
.68 .49 .36 and then plain 18 14 11. tuned to standard on 24.75 scale.
first of all, it feels amazing for strumming and acoustic lessons, plus it really feels like i have to work on these barre chords for once so it helps me feel in touch with my students and see where they might not be pushing hard enough. for heavy riffs the big bad low strings don't feel so wierd, and the bends are quite easily done as in the middle of the neck there,s not as much tension and you pull down on the strings anyway.
and of course for tuning to B these strings do the job they're supposed to.
my neck also hasn't budged at all! which is amazing. but it's canadian rock maple on a maple fretboard.
the question is, should i keep the guitar in check? any surprises that may happen down the road?
