Hi from the newbie and advice needed
« on: April 27, 2011, 07:02:57 PM »
Hi all,

I have been playing for many years on and off. Mostly non single coils guitars. Now, I feel I need to have a single coils guitar :D.
So, I am almost finished with my Strat project (warmoth). Time to choose pups, and all I hear and read about BKN is telling me they should be the pups for my project.

So, I heard all the samples and read the descriptions. Now the question . . . I will play mostly some blues and funk, but like to stretch to Deep Purple or Floyd, when in the mood. Can I cover that with vintage choice i.e. Mother's milk or better to go bit hotter with Irish Tour? If it helps, body is alder and neck is goncalo alves with pao ferro fretboard.

Thanks for any help and looking forward to learn from all of you.

I'm afraid my experience with single coils is very limited but I can tell you that the Trilogy Suites I have in my guitar (neck and middle only) will certsianly do Blues and Rock like Deep Purple. I'll be writing a proper review of them when my Holydiver arrives for the bridge. My initial impressions are that they are quite versatile and will suit you well but others with more experience of single coils might have a better option for you.
BKP owned:

Bridge - Emerald; Cold Sweat; Crawler; A-Bomb; Holydiver; Miracle Man; Sinner; Trilogy Suite

Neck - Emerald; Cold Sweat; Crawler; Holydiver; Sinner; Trilogy Suite

I can´t really put in much weight in this as I only have tried one BKP single coil, an Irish Tour in the middle (I heard thats where you best judge the quality of a single) of a HSH, but I can tell you that there it is great. Vintage voicing, strong, clear, great single coil character and with a certain kind of...well not exactly dirt, it´s a kind of nastyness that I love in my HSH singles.
It works absolutly wonderfull paired with the two humbuckers I have when in combination with the RY bridge (all coils on) and the Mule neck (middle plus outer neck coil). Actually the beauty of those positions makes me use them more than the IT alone (I´m more of a humbucker guy in general though). But when I wanne go old school with single coil character melody or solo it just goes (though I kinda like playing "Killing in the name of" by Rage against the machine on it...that is until the chorus, there I need to go RY). Claptons Layla is great with the IT, let me tell you that.

I just find the IT to be a great fit in my vintage rock (+ blues and metal) axe.
BKPs in use: 10th set / RY set / Holy Diver b, Emerald n / Crawler bridge, Slowhand mid MQ neck/ Manhattan n
On the sidelines: Stockholm b / Suppermassive n, Mule n, AM set, IT mid

I recommend Slowhands in this case. They have some extra output and mids. Great to cover Purple etc, but still vintage enough for blues and funk.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

I´d imagine that. I hear they are like ITs but fatter and more mids, so I would have probably picked them if I intended to use single coils in neck or bridge, where I need that extra...well you know ;)
I just chose ITs cause I think they are more single coil-ish in the classical sence, which is not to say the slowhands are modern sounding.

If I had any SSS guitar it would be focused on blues and rock, vintage style, and I would therefore fit it with Slowhand bridge and neck and probably IT middle. Mhhh I need to get me a strat...^^

I have the IT's in a swampashstrat (bridge is a Crawler) and they are great, but for Purple-stuff the Slowhands provide a bit more mids and oomph. Still enough vintage, don't worry.
