Matching the looks!
« on: May 25, 2011, 06:38:25 PM »
Hey guys. This isn't as much about the pickups themselves as is it about how they look (my apologies if this is offtopic or if it belongs somewhere else).

I really love the options available on the humbuckers, but I'm getting pickups for a HSH guitar - and I want the pickups to match eachother. This is somewhat of a problem when the singlecoils only come in 5 standard colors which in no way match the camo or metal cover looks. Only by choosing the black cover (or uncovered) humbuckers can I get it to match the singlecoil, which I can get in black.

Is there any way to combine the cooler designs with the singlecoil, without it looking silly?

I know this is a very subjective matter (and also a little stupid to post about, I'm a perfectionist!), but I would like to know your opinions about this :)

Thanks!

Edit:
Another question:  How custom can one make the look of the pickup covers? I can see they can be modified to a certain degree by request.

Your best bet would be to PM Tim and ask him but the covers are very customisable right down to custom artwork in some cases.

BTW is this the same Deadlock from the Metbb?

Alright, I'll probably try that :)

And no, I would be a completely different Deadlock ;) Hehe.

I had the same problem as I use an HSS guitar. I asked Tim but it seems he doesn't have the equipment he needs to do the same kind of unique covers he does for the humbuckers.

Hey man, thanks for posting here. I didn't get to write Tim yet, so your post was very helpful :) Although it kind of sucks that we can't have cool singlecoil pickups aswell ;)

Which covers/looks did you go for with your HSS setup?

Apparently it's purely down to the cost of the equipment he'd need to do the same things with single coil covers so I suppose he will do special single coil covers in the future at some point.

As for the covers I went for; therein lies a story. As my guitar has black hardware the only viable option for the single coils was black and everything else had to go from there. I really liked the burnt chrome but figured that on a guitar with black hardware and black single coils it would look silly. The same thing applied to most of the other covers too but I really liked the black battleworn shown on the website on the Painkiller. To me a more accurate description was battle scarred as it had scarring and no unsightly chips all over it so I asked for one just like that as I thought the scarring would go well with the flame maple top on the guitar. When the pickup arrived it was a mess. The scarring was there but it was also absolutely covered in small chips so instead of looking like a conscious design, it just looked like a knackered old pickup. I talked extensively with Bare Knuckle about it but they said it was impossible to guarantee no chips on the cover so I assume the picture on the website that clearly has no chips at all was a lucky fluke. I couldn't take the chance that another battleworn cover would arrive as bad as the last one as it really did look awful and as Bare Knuckle said the probability was that it would have chips all over it, I had no choice but to change to a plain black cover and I only went for that because Ben assured me they had solved the problem of the black cover chipping and peeling. It's not ended up as interesting as I would have liked but it still looks good and in fairness to Bare Knuckle, they were very patient and helpful even if they couldn't reproduce what was shown on the website so I have no complaints.

It seems to me that if you have single coils and want a cover, black is the only viable option.

Alright, thanks again :)

I was thinking about plain black for the humbuckers, but I just think it would be such a shame to get a Bare Knuckle pickup, and not get a cool cover to go with it.

It really isn't an issue - the sound is what matters, right? But I know it will bug me if the covers won't match! Hehe.
