Suggest..a pair..for 7string
« on: May 05, 2011, 10:52:37 PM »
After reading alot here, and talking with very helpful users i need some overall suggestion..

Guitar: Ibanez Rg 7321
Wood: Basswood, bolt-on
Sound im looking for: fluid, glassy and classic tone [woody, single coil type] with versatility and effortless picking. And very clear, tight technical riff with the definition of every note.
Inspired: Yngqwie Malmsteen, Van halen, Dream theater, System of a down, opeth, porcupine tree, Dragon force, Iron Maiden, Metallica, anthrax.

Considering pair: Bridge-C.Nailbomb/Aftermath/Painkiller, Neck-AV.Coldsweat/RY

Feel free to suggest, thanks in advance.

A-Bomb, C-Bomb or Miracle Man in the bridge. The Painkiller or Aftermath are not fat enough for what you're looking for from most of those groups.

Cold Sweat neck is amazing. Fluid as hell. (Hell is a very fluid place.)

Bridge - Holydiver would be my first choice, followed by Miracle Man

Neck - Can't go wrong with the Cold Sweat, though the Holydiver and Miracle Man would also sound very good.

Bridge - Emerald; Cold Sweat; Crawler; A-Bomb; Holydiver; Miracle Man; Sinner; Trilogy Suite

i heard basswood body guitar needs a ceramic bridge pup for tight bass response.. maybe im wrong so should i go for all alnico-V  on rg 7321? as holydiver bridge is alnico.. then why not rebel yell?

I find that some of these things you can take with a pinch of salt. I heard the same thing about maple guitars yet an Alnico Nailbomb was too tight for me and the Holydiver works like a dream. The Rebel Yell is apparently even tighter than the Nailbomb! The reason I suggested Holydiver is because a lot of the bands you mentioned either use or are heavily influenced by that smoother 80s style. Metallica etc. is more modern and is more like the Miracle Man but it's still within the range of the Diver. I'm sure the Nailbomb will also be good but it will have a much tighter and grittier feel to it that isn't what a lot of those bands are about. I believe basswood is actually quite a neutral wood so it will probably take most things well. If you have to go ceramic, the Miracle Man is smoother than the Nailbomb in my experience so would work better but it's not as versatile as the Holydiver. No doubt others will disagree but that's my reasoning.

LOL, no small task! I don't know of anything that relates specifically to a basswood guitar with a Holydiver and I assume you've read my review of the Holydiver already so here are some links to clips I really liked that use Holydivers:

And here's some clips of the kind of sound they can produce generally:

If you don't like that kind of smooth and fluid tone and prefer something distinctly tighter and more modern then look to the Nailbomb for a grittier and edgier tone. The Aftermath is more dry, super tight and surprisingly quite organic while the Painkiller is more ice-picky. I've tried a Nailbomb and wrote a detailed review of that here too. I haven't personally tried the Aftermath and did briefly try a Painkiller in someone elses guitar but it wasn't for me as I don't like it that ice-picky.

The Painkiller, to me at least, has a really sharp pick attack. It's a tight pickup but it's more than that, it's very sharp with it and very precise. I just found it a bit too clinical and a bit too focused. As for 'edgy', I'm referring to the nature of the distortion. While the Holydiver is smooth, the notes on the Nailbomb are very sharply defined and have a real rawness to them. I think that's what makes the Nailbomb so aggressive sounding. The Holydiver in comparison is so much more refined. It has an aggressive edge but it isn't as dominant as it is with the Nailbomb. Some people may like it but it wasn't for me at all.

Is there a way of turning off the -v flag for your posts. There's one for the *nix bids out there in interweb land.
