NGD advice wanted...
« on: May 17, 2011, 11:06:18 AM »
I'm trying out a Peavey Wolfgang Special tomorrow, the guy says its an early Korean one - can't find any Korean Wolfy Specials on the net, they're all Japanese (I'm assuming they made the early ones in Korea, then changed to Japan for some reason?????).  He's asking £350 inc case, sounds fair.  Oh, and it has Wolfy-USA pickups, not the far east ones.

Here's the pictures...

Special EXPs were made in Korea. They cost £350 new, but seem to have held their value well, and with the case and upgraded pickups that seems a decent price.

I think that's a correct price for this nice guitar.

You're well into Floyds and superstrats (albeit not necessarily Strat-shaped) at the moment, aren't you?  :)

But sorry, I don't know anything about these.  Just checking out the thread.

Just trying to get something with a floyd thats gigable - having a right 'mare with my BC Rich Superstrat.  The Mockingbird was great at staying in tune, but I didn't like the neck or the way it hung on a strap.

This particular Wolfgang Special has me confused - its supposedly a Korean one, but I can't see any Korean ones with two knobs.  I'm thinking that the second 'tone' knob is an addition to the guitar (like the coil tap switch).

I guess it's a very easy mod to do, if the control cavity has room for it.  Just like on the Music Man guitars.

I did think there was something odd about the mini-switch.  I really dislike mini-switches.

Played this guitar tonight, was nice (really nice for the cash), but the guy had a USA Wolfgang too which just blew it out of the water in terms of feel (though I preferred the trem on the Special).

Short version? - I passed.

Gonna save up a few more pennies and get a US-made one - the necks are just much nicer (imo).

I've never tried a US (or Korean) Wolfgang - how well does it compare with the Music Man EVH/Axis?

there is nowhere locally selling the US-made Axis, just the Sterling AX20/40.

fwiw, the Korean Wolfgang is a nicer guitar than the Sterling AX40 - trem is solid on the Peavey but the tuning on the AX40 was all over the place.

unfortunately, the cheaper models aren't speaking to me when I play them - just leaves me cold.

my two main guitars (Les Paul and a Tele) were both guitars I knew had something special when I played them.  In the case of the LP, I was actually shopping for a Les Paul that day, but with the Tele I was just killing time before a gig and it was so nice I had to have it.
