Bass string on guitar?
« on: May 15, 2011, 08:42:07 PM »
Hey,
I just had this crazy idea and would like to hear your opinion / knowledge about this.

The background: Now I have this 7 string guitar and like my lower B to feel pretty tight, about a 62er string.
But I am also a DR strings fan (especially the nice simple roundwounds), but they donīt have set that suits me properly so I am forced to mix sets (roundwound nickel plated + 1 lower b). I can either use a Dīaddario single string or buy a whole set of  DR DDTs super $%&#ing heavy (1 60er string).

But because this quite costly I thought: Why not just use a single bass string of similar thickness for the same price? Cause I could get great DR bass strings easily...

I donīt know if I am overlooking anthing like force applied to the neck by the string or anything, I am not familiar with bass strings.

So is this possible?

Cheers (literally)

Though depending on what kind of bridge you have, if you don't mind it sticking out it wont be a problem.

Itīs a tune-o-matic string through body. The basic Dean Vendetta 1.7, my very first own guitar...
so you are right, at least from the ball end standpoint it still is possible nfe.

Anyhing else that I should think about?

why not use a thicker string? 60 isn't very thick...

I had done this when I was 13 or so because I read some rumor about Kurt Cobain doing it with bass strings and piano wire. It went on a Squier Strat and worked fine with a little width adjustment to the nut slot. By worked fine I mean I wasn't very good to begin with and was playing through a solid state Epiphone combo with a 12" speaker. Sounded good to me at the time and I even tried some flatwounds which also worked fine. I'm also a DR Strings fan, use the DDTs on all of mine, but am not a 7 string player.

i use a .95 bass string on my 8 string for the low f as any lower tension doesn't cut it for me. and it,s a 26.5 scale so it's a borderline baritone

the ball end sticks out on the back as it's string thru, and i had to drill the hole in my tuner to accomodate a bigger string, but i've been using the 95 68 52 42 32 17 13 10 gauge for a year and it works like a charm.
My BK's:
Black Dog8-Riff Raff8 / Black Dog7-Mule7
C-Bomb Set / Blackhawk Bridge
Holydiver Set/ BG50 Set

Or you can remove the ball end with a pair of pliers and replace it with one from a regular string. Not pretty but works!

I'm just glad that D'Addario make guitar strings up to .080.
A-Pig 7s, Miracle Man & Mule, Cold Sweats... Expensive kit and no talent posse.

true! d'addario's 80 are another nice solution. still double wound like a bass string however but you get the guitar ball end.
