Ibanez 7-string, choice of BKs?
« on: May 22, 2011, 11:47:52 PM »
Hey all!
I got a Ibanez RG-7421 (7-string) which I'm concidering putting some BK's in.
I mostly play death, black progressive(as in DreamTheater), as well as most the other genres, but I'm not aiming this PU choice on that.

For the PUs; I was thinking Aftermath in bridge, and Miracle Man in neck (if mixing of sets are possible to order).
Would it fit my style,or should I concider a different pair?
My other question is; will I have to extend the PU sockets? Asking since I've heard they got that "EMG size".

The "Sound I'm going for-list"; Behemoth,DT,Nevermore, and so on. Hard to point it out.

Hope someone got more knowledge on this than me :) And just ask if there's something unclear!

I wouldn't use an aftermath for the bridge. I think a nailbomb. Wait for more experienced guys to chime in. I'm a BKP noob

It really up to which cab, and amp you're using. If you use a rectifier, then i would suggest a aftermath, or a cold sweat. If you're using something like engl, or a 5150, then i will suggest trying a cpig. If you want more loomis then a aftermath. If you want more nergal, then cpig

the aftermath sounds nothing like nevermore, in my opinion
Riff Raff, Mules, Black Dog, VHII's, Cold Sweat

At the moment I'm neither running cabs or amps, but rack&preamp line-in. (Damage Control Demonizer pedal\preamp).
Later on there will either be an Axe FX or an so far undecided ENGL top.
Poor life of a student, although I've saved up some money for new PUs :)

Seems like ceramic pig could be a better choice in bridge, indeed. Would it suit the neck-position just as well?

Doesn't Nolly have Aftermaths in his 7321? It's pretty spiffy, but it's run through an AxeFX so results may (really) vary, if you don't have an AxeFX.

Some of the bands you mention use EMGs, so the Miracle Man would be a good starting point.

I've got a set of Warpigs (ceramic bridge) in RG7620, and they sound really nice - they can pull off really fluid tones, and are still crushing and tight when it comes to rhythm playing. I play through a 6505+, and play prog metal in the line of Tesseract and Periphery, and they work for that, and the neck is really nice for cleans. Also, as it's A5 rather than ceramic, you can get some really nice looser tones out of it, while still being very smooth.

That's as far as my experience goes with bareknuckles unfortunately, but I can vouch for the WP.

If the routes for the 7241 is anything like this one, you will have to do some filing to fit the screws, but not a lot. You definitely won't need to do anything to the wood!

if you're after the Nevermore type of sound (which is what I want out of my 7620's) the Miracleman bridge is what you want.
that pickup nails that type of tone in a basswood ibby 7, but also gives you a much sweeter lead tone than a 707 would.
especially thru a recto or a 5150.
can I be the devil on your shoulder?
