Alder Body, Maple neck Strat - Mothers milk?
« on: June 06, 2011, 03:20:46 PM »
So, i have an alder body strat-a-like with a maple neck and would love to stick some mothers milk in it but just want to check with you, the all knowing masters of tone whether they will "work". The guitar is pretty bright so i'm a bit worried about getting the wrong ones... and the eq graph scares the life out of me but i'm not sure how to read it exactly!

Vintage hot is as hot i want to go with them. I've heard Irish Tours are quite bright and the slow hands seems a little middy.

Ultimately i love everything i've heard of the mothers milk... but then maybe the apaches are more suitable? Basically, i don't really know!

edit: Oh yeah, and should a consider base plates?

I would def. have a look at Apaches, they sound stellar, specially with maple necks.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

Thanks Telerocker, I was kinda put of the apaches because of the association but after listening to every clip i can find i liking them alot.

Should I bother with baseplates? I'm not really sure what they do... more output and bass?

Baseplate on the bridge position wouldn't be a bad idea. More bass and mids, retaining the same top end.
Black Dog (b), Abraxas (b), The Mule (n), Mississippi Queen (n), Trilogy Suite (m)

Had: Riff Raff 7 (b), Painkiller 8 (b)

The Apaches would certainly be a good call. There's very little you can't cover with them, and because of the sweetened midrange and top end from the AIII magnets, the bridge is very usable as a hard rock pickup. A baseplate on the bridge would, as metale says, increase the low end and power with very little effect on the voicing.

FWIW, the Irish Tours are essentially overwound Mother's Milks, so are actually darker in the top end.

i've got IT's in an alder/maple us strat.they great, not too bright, cover everything a sss strat should.the bridge pup is without baseplate and imho outstanding.i wonder what it'd sound like with a base plate, but it's spot on without, especially
for very well defined cleanish bass notes.
i'm sure i'd love all the strat sets though.
