Help with getting a good tone from a superstrat
« on: June 07, 2011, 06:44:29 PM »
Hi,

I have a handmade WAYNE charvel and love everything about it BUT! the sound it makes.:(

Alder body
birdseye maple neck
ebony fretboard
floyd rose

its just so thin and sharp sounding

and its kind of spongy????

I also have a 2011 les paul standard with what I believe are burst buckers in it! and is weight relieved NOT chambered    result :)

but I find it hard to play  the paul anywhere above the 16th etc usual stuff and the wayne is my

so how do I do it?

I had a charvel pro mod ( japan ) with a Dimarzio paf pro and it sounded great  so I put in a paf pro and its still just so shrill :(

I don't know what all this midrange tonk and low end butter etc is haha so please keep it simple.

thanks

Hi,
if you could give more info about the sound you wish / the style you play it could help.
You want Vintage or modern? Mostly clean or dirty? Metal, rock, pop, funk, alternative, blues,...whatīs your flavour?

Try to describe the sound you have in your head as best you can using any means nececary, even if strange analogies are involved ;)
BKPs in use: 10th set / RY set / Holy Diver b, Emerald n / Crawler bridge, Slowhand mid MQ neck/ Manhattan n
On the sidelines: Stockholm b / Suppermassive n, Mule n, AM set, IT mid

Ha. Ok.

Well I play rock/ blues. No slipknot. Lead acdc.Sabbath zepplin satriani. Paul Gilbert.

Basically I want it to sound.

Balanced.Even .Tight.Full fat.Sustain .cutting. Big!

Ha. Basically like a les paul.

My guess would be Nailbomb, as it does rock in the flavours you want and is versatily. Maybe a Holydiver, which should give you the fullness you want.
I have no hands-on experience with either though.

I donīt think 250ks are the way to go, as they do darken your sound, but they will soften it too much and take the edge / cut of your tone. Better turn your 500ks down at times, but donīt do it permanently.

It might sound over the top, but if you're really worried about brightness, a set of alnico Warpigs can work wonders. The fat midrange and smooth top end will tame the top end, while the low end should remain very tight if the guitar isn't producing much bass. The sustain is pretty phenomenal due to the output, and the voicing is really not all that aggressive, while the alnico magnets mean they have a great dynamic response. Worth considering!

If the thought of the Warpigs scares you (it shouldn't!) then the Holy Diver is a classic choice for fattening up bright superstrats.

I was thinking the Holyy Diver and, for more PAF-ish big creamy tones, the Crawler. I have this one in my swampashstrat/ebony fretboard, and makes it really fat and big sounding for a bolt-on superstrat. Les Paul-sort-of-sounds can be achieved by rolling the the toneknob a tad back. (Crawler matches in splitmode the IT's very well, also the HD will split well).
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

We keep the Holy Divers in stock

Also - do consider having a block upgrade on the floyd
I had the block on one of my guitars changed to one of cold rolled steel (1/2" thick) and it added a lot of beef back to the guitar whilst still keeping definition.

We have these made by the same engineer who makes BKPs pickup parts - so we know the quality is excellant

It certainly sounds like a bright guitar with that spec. I'm with Nolly on this one. Alnico Warpigs would kill all that treble and as a less extreme solution, the Holydiver should sound incredible. I'd maybe try a Holydiver set instead of mixing it with a Cold Sweat.
BKP owned:

Bridge - Emerald; Cold Sweat; Crawler; A-Bomb; Holydiver; Miracle Man; Sinner; Trilogy Suite

Neck - Emerald; Cold Sweat; Crawler; Holydiver; Sinner; Trilogy Suite
