Ideas for neck-through?
« on: June 13, 2011, 02:06:42 PM »
Firstly, thanks to everyone who has helped me choose pickups for other guitars. Unfortunately you've turned me into a bareknuckle addict and i need you're help again!

I have an old Washburn Falcon which is a 5 piece neck-through design of maple and rosewood with an ebony board. The body wings are ash with maple Top.

I'm thinking maybe Crawlers? I'm normally a vintage hot kinda guy but i don't mind trying new things! :)

Ever since the new site launched I've been wondering why the Crawlers were now listed in the contemporary range - while rather hot and not "true vintage", they definitly have a rather vintage vibe and voicing, nothing like hi-gain metal pups.

wrt/ your question: if your washburn is on the bright side - which seems to be the case from the woods and construction as well as from the few reviews I've seen - and you're looking for a warm, full, thick tone with chimey cleans and singing leads, then you want Crawlers. FWIW, they work wonder on my Vox Custom 24 (matsumoku '81, maple going-thru neck, maple sides, rosewood fretboard).
Have: Crawlers, BGF 50/52s, Mules, ABomb, RiffRaff
Had : Slowhands (n&m), Trilogy (b)

I agree with BigB. The Crawlers are sort of a hotrodded PAF and to me more vintagehotsounding then contempary. Should be a good choiche for the Falcon. The Abraxas would work too (more open then the Crawler, with less oommphh).
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

+1 to the Crawlers - especially as the bridge pickup is pretty close to the bridge on ther versions I've seen and it will need a pickup that has warmth (which the Crawler is good for)

Crawlers will indeed fit the bill.  And please let's see a picture of the guitar!

(Might be worth considering Abraxas too?)

Thanks alot, i'm very pleased that you've made it easy for me to choose the Crawlers!

And please let's see a picture of the guitar!

Previous owner didn't love it as much as he should have... quite a few dings but mainly on the back and bottom.
