Help me build my rig
« on: July 11, 2011, 05:32:15 AM »
Wuddup Bareknuckle? First post here...just saying.

Anyway; so I'm now about to get myself my first all tube amp (peavey 6505 combo) and I realized that my next amp after this would probably be a proper stack (ENGL powerball is my dream amp) so I should work on building my pedal board (as in FX choice).

but before we get to stomp boxes I should mention that I intend on replacing the speaker almost immediately. I'm thinking the Wizard from Eminance, I have an Eminance in my Vox Valvetronix and it kills. Anybody have any experience with this speaker?

now the pedals...

First of all as these are being collected over time I'll order them chronologically, they are after all expensive pedals especially considering I'm from/living in a developing country.

ISP Decimator
Keeley compressor (to counteract the signal loss from the noise gate)

Now heres where the suggestions come in handy

Overdrive pedal to be used as a boost (looking at the Maxon OD with the tiny tube in it)
Wah pedal (looking at the budwah)
delay
rotary speaker simulator
Fuzz (for fun)
phaser

And now for the part your waiting for. Some Bareknuckles for my Schecter C-1 classic trumps everything below the noisegate. I'm looking at a Nailbomb in the bridge and a Blackdog in the neck, how is this as a combo? Cleans are a must as is clarity on full chords when playing through a high gain amp.

I'm into bands like
Opeth
Mastodon
Death
Cynic
Atheist
Various stoner bands
Reggae, lots and lots of reggae.
Funk
Djent bands are a great new trend in metal; I'd join a djent band, just one with death metal vocals.
Jazz is also cool, it sounds cool and is way more fun to play than it is to listen to.
Progressive in general
etc

As you see I'm all over the place and need some pickups that can do everything. My next electric is going to be a pure metal guitar so I can grab some Painkillers but in the mean time this Schecter stands to be my "can do anything/progressive" guitar so it needs to be versatile.

PS: I'm thinking of swapping out the tubes in the Peavey for some JJ el34's. How do you see that going?

You should try to keep your first rig as simple as possible.
Don't go overboard with pedals, tempting though it may be.
If you need a noise gate, fine. But the compressor shouldn't be necessary.

No point in getting an OD pedal with a tube, really. Plenty of good, affordable overdrive pedals out there to boost.
Do you mean "boost" as in "boost for leads", or as in "I need more gain all of the time"?
Hey Nonny Nonny mylord!

Get your amp first and build your pedals from there.
If its too noisy get a supressor. If you want more tightness and emphasis on the mids then a boost is a good option-the Maxon OD808 is excellent. And dont forget a tuner.

Those wuold be the first 3 id get IF my amp needed them. Once you got those in place you can start adding 'colour' to your sound, especially for lead and clean work-phase, wah, chorus, delay, etc

Pickup wise a calibrated alnico set of nailbombs would be a good option as it gives you flexibility.

Hope this helps

In my opinion there's no need to swap out the 5150/6505 speakers - at first at least. They're actually pretty damned good speakers. Personally, I prefer the voicing of the Celestion G12K-100 (and the EVm12L black label, but these are probably out of your price range), BUT this is fine tweaking - the stock Peavey Sheffield 1200 speakers are actually very decent.

JJ preamp tubes won't hurt. I slam the front end of my 5150-II with a bodenhamer bloody murder (like a tuberscreamer, level on 9/10 or max, tone about 6/10 and distortion/gain on ZERO), and keep the preamp gain down to about 2/10. I also use a decimator prorackG in front and in the loop (it's got 2 linked channels). Finally, I use a MXR 10-band eq in the loop to take out the extreme bottom and top ends, and to shape the tone and match to venues if needed.

Starting off with only the 5150 combo, these are the things I would add in this order (and none of them is *absolutely* essential): Decimator, tubescreamer at the front, eq in the loop (does the combo have a loop?).

Hope this helps,

Roo

The 6505 speakers are surprisingly decent. I wouldn't worry about those, for some time. Wizards are a great choice, however.

You may want to look into Seymour Duncan pedals. They make some seriously impressive tube-powered boosters and overdrives, and I'm quite fond of my mates Tweak Fuzz (I'm still partial to the Electro-Harmonix Bass Big Muff Pi).
Wahs should always be investigated, personally. The ProGuitarShopDemos channel on YouTube has saved me a lot of trips to Guitar Center, over the years.
The MXR Carbon Copy Delay should be just fine for most situations. If you need anything more, look to the Blackstar HT-Delay.
The Dunlop Rotovibe is my personal favourite rotary speaker pedal, as it gives full control, at all times. I was quick to sell it, however, as I never used it for anything unless I was stoned and bored.
Phasers are another effect you need to really investigate. The MXR Black Label Phaser sounds decent, to me.

I don't have any hands-on experience with BKP, but I would imagine that the Miracle Man and Black Dog would benefit you, best.
Praise the Sunn.
