Help me pick- potted or unpotted for my rig/style?!
« on: June 28, 2011, 06:57:39 PM »
Okay, the "potted vs unpotted" debate is seriously all over the place. I've been reading forums for days trying to figure out whether or not to go potted or unpotted, and the answer is still unclear for me with my particular rig and settings. I plan on getting a set of Mules, and I need to order soon to have these in time for a session. So any help is greatly appreciated.

Here's my rig- Gibson Explorer (currently, with Gibson 57 Classics), Orange Rocker 30, Orange 412 cab. I also use a Fulltone Octafuzz from time to time- and this thing gets hairy. My volume is usually around 4 or 5, and the gain is about 7.5... With my amp being 30W.

I dialed in just enough gain for sustain and punchiness for palm mutes, but not enough for any kind of mushy saturation or fur. It's tight and crunchy- typical Orange tone. I play post-hardcore and experimental rock, so I need clarity. But I want that good old vintage rock vibe in the guitar tone.

Any opinions on whether I should go potted or not? I'm probably planning on getting pickup covers either way. IF you'd like me to make a video of me playing to hear my sound, or hear me playing
with my band, I can upload a video and post a link to help.

Any help is greatly appreciated! Sorry for such an overdone and unexciting post.  :D

Nobody has any experiences to speak of? I know there's no exact border line between what can go unpotted and what needs to be potted, but surely there's some general idea of what is safe and what isn't.

Half cranked 30 watt valve amp- bad idea for unpotted pickups?

This is right around the same amount of gain that I use. Just enough for a little chunk.

Does that seem like a bad idea for unpotted pickups?

I don't think there would be a problem with unpotted at that gain level and 30 watts, however to be sure I suggest you ask Tim

If you don't mind, how would I get in touch with Tim? I emailed Bare Knuckle sales and talked to Ben, and he helped me a little bit on my situation, but I'm a still a little uncertain. I'm going to be paying well enough for a set of BKP, so I want to get soemthing that'll work in time for my session and long after.

didn't you say you wanted to change your old gibson pickups because they were going microphonic? i would say not wax potting your new ones would make them feel microphonic to you...
My BK's:
Black Dog8-Riff Raff8 / Black Dog7-Mule7
C-Bomb Set / Blackhawk Bridge
Holydiver Set/ BG50 Set

I never had an unpotted pickup and don't think I ever will. For the music style you're playing I'd really think you'll want them potted.
Current BKPs: Miracle Man, Nailbomb, Juggernaut, VHII
Past BKPS: Holy Diver, Trilogy Suite, Sinner, Black Dog

Keven, the main reason I'm switching out my Gibson pickups is for this obnoxious buzzing that I've been getting. A local tech told me they were microphonic, and tapped all over the guitar and pickups, with it coming quite loudly through the amp. Previous techs ignored it, and didn't tell me so I thought it was normal. I don't get any squeal from those pickups though, and it can hardly pick up my voice at all. But I get this strange buzzing that gets dialed out with the volume knob and changes with the tone knob. The buzzing isnt even completely why I want to get rid of them now, I did some research on Mules and I think they'd be much better for me- especially if I can get them unpotted. The 57s feel kinda muffled and not open enough. And I'd love coil splitting, so i'm ordering these Mules with 4 conductors.

I talked to Tim and he said he uses unpotted pickups (Mule and Riff Raff) playing Ozzy covers. He said he doesn't get squeal at those gain/volume levels, and most players would probably use a bit more gain than me for Randy Rhoads or Zakk Wylde tones.

Alex, for the style I'm playing, the unpotted sound would be ideal but the potted protection from microphonics would also be ideal.

I plan on getting covers on my pickups and told Tim this, and apparently BKP puts some tape between the pickup and cover to kind of get the best of both worlds. Not exactly what Tim said, there was a little more detail to the taping and location of the tape, but I don't recall at the moment.

Anybody have experience with the covered, unpotted pickups? or unpotted pickups and these gain levels?

I'm thinking I'm just going to go for unpotted and use them this way for the session coming up. If I get squeals at band practice levels, I'll send em back after the session to be potted. I'm not sure if I'll have to pay for potting waiting that long, but I'd be willing to pay a little bit for tone.

I think a good compromise is to get an unpotted neck with a potted bridge. That way you always have a "safe" spot on your pickup selector if you do start to get intrusive feedback on the neck position. Plus, I feel like the neck pickup is where you really get to enjoy the benefits of the unpotted sound.

On such a "small" gear, the choice won't matter no?
I mean, you can feel the difference potted/unpotted when you plug in a 100w and play at a considerable volume.
Chosing betwin potted or unpotted pups in this case is, in my humble opinion, like chosing betwin a painkiller or a warpig for a Stagg.
I Might be wrong so I let other people answer  :o
