Trying to choose pickups for an Ibanez RGA8
« on: July 06, 2011, 08:42:48 AM »
Fellow forum members, excuse my wetness behind the ears.

I got an Ibanez RGA8 for my birthday recently and I can't be more satisfied with it, aside from the abysmally terrible Ibanez stock pickups. I have read around the forums and have seen that many people recommend Painkillers for this particular guitar. However, I have also heard an RGA8 with Cold Sweats in it, which I really liked. It is an extremely tough decision for me, so I am asking you guys for help.

The tone I am looking for is somewhat djenty, but overall I just want something very defined. As far as the lead tone, I employ a lot of legato, so I would like a very smooth tone with lots of sustain, and also rather glassy like Paul Gilbert's lead tone in the early Racer X days.

Thanks in advance for the help!

I've just fitted a set of Aftermath pickups to my RGA8 and the difference between those and the original Ibanez pups is astounding. Now the bottom end is not mush, the lead sound is just great and the clean tones are a joy to behold.
From the sound of it you need Cold Sweats to get a bit more treble but honestly if you adjust your external eq the Aftermaths would be fine. While at it, I moved the volume control nearer to the toggle switch, it was previously in the way. The original toggle switch was soldered into the preamp pcb so I fitted a new switch to give single coil tapping and fitted a new 500k push pull volume pot to give out of phase between the neck and bridge pups. The permutations are quite useable and proved worthwhile.
