New pickups for a Schecter C-1 Classic
« on: July 22, 2011, 03:16:05 AM »
After I buy my new Peavey 6505 combo the next big purchase I'm going to make (after a new speaker and a noise gate) is a nice new pair of pickups. My guitar is mahogany with a flame maple top and maple neck with a rosewood fretboard. I'm primarily a metal guy but I'm also huge into other genres like fusion, funk, afro beat and especially reggae so cleans are a must. As i'll typically be playing metal/hard-rock here are some of the artists I listen to most.

Opeth
Cynic
Mastodon
Death
Atheist
Carcass
AIC
Porcupine Tree
Karnivool
Kyuss
Fu Manchu
Oceansize
Megadeth

So far the nail bomb in the bridge position looks like a good choice for me, but I'm not sure on what to get for a neck pickup. I'm thinking a Blackdog but I'm not sure how the combo would sound; adversely I was also thinking "why get a high output pickup? I can get all the gain I want from the amp" so I was thinking of maybe having the blackdog in the bridge and a riff raff in the neck. Any suggestions?

BD and RiffRaff is not a bad idea. Have a look at the Rebel Yells too. They have an organic alnico tone, clean up well, provide serious mids and cut very well. They handle metal, no problem.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

There is just so much choice. If you could describe your desired tone exact, rather than the style or band, I'm sure people could help. Theres so many people on the forum saying "I want a pickup to play 80s metal; metalcore; 80s rock; etc..." and what happens is that about 50 people comment recommending different pickups. This leaves you more confused than you was originally. It happened to me at first haha

The only thing I'd say about a Black Dog bridge, Riff Raff neck combo is that you're combining a relatively dark/middy bridge pickup with a very bright neck pickup, so you may not get much contrast/variation between the two - especially in a 24-fret guitar where the pickups are closer together!
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

Can't comment on the Riff Riff, but my Black Dog works great with my 5150!
Current BKPs: Miracle Man, Nailbomb, Juggernaut, VHII
Past BKPS: Holy Diver, Trilogy Suite, Sinner, Black Dog

youre kinda all over the map, tonally speaking, with some of those bands having a modern polished tone and some leaning more towards a sludge tone. i say a5 nailbomb is a good choice for the bridge. i find it to be pretty versatile. i havent tried any bkp neck pickups so i cant comment there.

Sorry guys I should have been specific. Currently I have the classic JB/Jazz combo; I like the tone a lot but its not what I'm looking for, it needs a tad less high end, some more bass and mids but still with the clarity for full chords. I'm actually also thinking of swapping the tubes on the 6505 to el34's to give it a more british sound. I really love my midrange so I've always taken to that marshall sound but with an extreme metal twist.

I'm actually also thinking of swapping the tubes on the 6505 to el34's to give it a more british sound. I really love my midrange so I've always taken to that marshall sound but with an extreme metal twist.

1. Replace your JB/Jazz combo with Bare Knuckle Pickups that suit your playing style and give you the sound you want. Normally machine wound pickups like Duncans don't give you good clarity with the full chords. Scatterwound pickups pickup the sound from your guitar in ways you'd never imagine, and never mush up when playing hi-gain chords.

2. Before you change your amp  tubes, make sure you give yourslef time with your pickups. If you still want more bass and midrange, and really want to change your tubes, I'd recommend E34L  tubes over EL34. Mabye even KT77's. The EL34's are somewhere between 6L6 and EL34, but the E34L's are just in a different league for players with your needs. I'll give you a description below of the 6L6, EL34, E34L and KT77. I've copied and pasted from Eurotubes who sell JJ tubes.

6L6GC ( 5881 )
A truly classic sounding 6L6GC. The lows are deep, big and round. The mids are very harmonically rich and natural while the highs are thick, creamy and very detailed. This is the tube for Peavey, Fender, Mesa, Soldano, Bogner ect.

EL34
This tube is as close to an NOS Mullard as you can get although I have to given mention to the Svetlana EL34 which is close, it’s very good but I like the way the JJ tubes break up better. They are very smooth and have the biggest low end of any current production EL34. I still prefer the JJ E34L for most applications simply because of it's extended low end and the fact that it's tighter and punchier.

E34L
This tube has all the tonal qualities of the JJ EL34 but it has an extended low end response and is a little punchier and more aggresive so I use these in all Marshall, Mesa, Carvin and just about any high gain guitar amps.

KT77
A truly beautiful reproduction of the original KT77 that will run in place of any EL34 type tube. A little bigger low end with a great chunk and a nice sizzle on the top end. The breakup is smooth and a bit less aggressive than the E34L's.

Do not waste your time with the 6505 combo... seriously. I have one, a 6505+ head and a 5150 head. It was a waste of cash. The 6505+ head I bought used for only 600, and it was just a year old. Also, check out FJA mods if you haven't already. You won't be able to put EL34s in without modification and even then Jerry states that they sound like muddy sh*t. 6505/+s just aren't designed to run with EL34s stock. You can do the 6L6/KT88 combo but once again Jerry advises against this move and he is "the" man when it comes to 5150/6505(+) work.

It may be a 6l6/KT66 combo but either way that's a no-no.
Second paragraph: http://www.fjamods.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=2

BTW, if EL34s are your thing why not get a 6534+? Pair it up with a good 2x12 cab or 4x12 (I use Orange cabs with mine and they are monstrous) and you'll be set. You'll end up spending a tad bit more but you'll be much happier in the end.
