i need a little advice.
« on: October 05, 2011, 10:47:12 PM »
hi there,

i play alot of jazz and alot of djenty stuff (and anything inbetween really) i was wondering which pickups would suit me best. (any advice would be greatly appreciated!)

i was thinking perhaps an aftermath in the bridge and i wasn't too sure about the neck (something warm and jazzy but also something i can use for heavier stuff and what not)

I play a seven string by the way!

thanks for listening!

I am no expert on the aftermath (yet, hopefully getting one soon), but I hear that the neck is warmer than most people expect. Also you maybe got a nice clean jazz tone out of it when you role down the tone. It certainly has the clarity and definition you need and will do nicely for the djenty stuff in the bridge. The neck will of course do the heavy stuff as well.

The AM is definetly made for the heavier stuff, but I recon nearly every BKP can also produce nice clean tones depending on your taste.
So I think the aftermath might work for the neck too, if you role the tone down, but other members will know more than me.

One other (probably totally insane) idea in my mind is a HS P90 neck like the stockholm. Single coil responce and clarity for the jazz and being able to do very agressive heavy stuff.
Then again this probably won´t work too well as I have know idea what I am talking about here^^

You migth wanna have a look at the Warpigs. They're quite brutal, but clean up nice and then provide thick jazzy tone. Even jazzplayers discovered them.

It was my initial thought as well, but you would have to get a set since the WP neck would be totally inbalanced with the AM bridge eq wise wouldn´t it?
And then the question is if you could get the djent out of them. Again, I am not an expert by a long shot, neither on these PUs, nore on djent, this is just what I am wondering.

Yeah, a set would be the best. The point is they could be bassheavy on a sevenstring. Depends on the amp too. For djent the Aftermath or Painkiller look more the obvious choiche. But not for jazzy cleans.

Speaking from the only BKP I have experience with, Warpigs can definitely djent. You can absolutely get a tight enough crunch out of a Ceramic one at least (I haven't tried A-Pigs). But you may need a little EQ'ing to get the low end under control if that's an issue with your guitar/tuning.

I actually don't think the Pigs are too rumbly unless you're tuning below like A or something. Even then I have an 8-string that my C-pig is in, and I like big strings, and with careful EQing I can still get those cutting Meshuggah tones out of it pretty easily.

In fact one of the guys in Periphery plays a guitar with Pigs (alnico I think).
