pickup with good high-end presence for mahog?
« on: September 09, 2011, 01:09:55 PM »
same background info as before: have a mahogany schecter with an AM in the bridge. I think I want a more grinding midrange (which would be the painkiller), but if I wanted more high end definition and presence, what could I go for? Cold Sweat? I tune to drop C, which doesn't mean I need the tightest pickup (AM) possible.

Cold Sweat. I'm thinking about putting those in an all mahogany Explorer. It was Tim's recommendation for that guitar.

Or a Miracle Man, which I see as a beefed up CS. Maybe I'm wrong.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

The Miracle Man could work indeed, it has a quite strong high end.
Current BKPs: Miracle Man, Nailbomb, Juggernaut, VHII
Past BKPS: Holy Diver, Trilogy Suite, Sinner, Black Dog

If so, what's the difference between the MM and CS? This is for a mahogany Saber body (really thin), but it still has a dark sound that I want to "open up."

the miracle man has a lot of treble, but it's a lot darker voiced

Hmm, that almost seems paradoxical! :p

I think I would just like to hear more top end with a nice mid-grind. I THINK the CS seems to be what I want... (going into an ibanez Saber body).

yeah
the high strings sound sharp and cutting, but the low strings sound growly and dark
it seems to capture the strongest frequency extremity
a trebly  and thin sounding  guitar will probably sound treblier, but a dark sounding guitar won't get brightened up

a good mid term between the cold sweat and the miracle man would be the ceramic nailbomb
guess that should deliver a bit more mid grind than both as well

Then it's Cold Sweat. Miracle Man is definitely darker. I had the bridge pickups in the same guitar and can tell for sure.

Cheers Stephan

I've had the MM, CS and C-Bomb in the same guitar.   The MM had good top end, but a lot of bass and a scooped mid range.   The CS had great top end bite, a bit of scoop and controlled bass.  The C-Bomb was the best of both worlds.... more bass than the CS but not as much as the MM, and a little more mid range grind than either.
BKPs: Black Dog (b) Slow Hand (n), Emerald (set), Holy Diver (set), C-Bomb (b), VHII (set), Rebel Yell (b) MQ (n), Mother's Milk (set)
