Caparison Horus pickup swap
« on: September 12, 2011, 07:47:08 AM »
Hey fellas.

I've read up on similar situations, and i've got it pretty much narrowed down to a few bkp's.

First of all, my primary style is melodic death metal, along the lines of, but not limited to;

In Flames, Soilwork, Insomnium, At the Gates

For rhythm tone, I'm looking for something like this

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ZmqA2Ne2wg&list=FL4yJ50FBad10bMD9h-qtQaA&index=3

That lead tone is a bit too trebly and sharp to me, though. Not to say it can't be dialed out by an amp.

What pickup though would you all recommend?

So far, my choices are : Ceramic Nailbomb, Miracleman, and the coldsweats!

Thanks!

I might actually be able to help, here! (usually my OCD gets the best of me and I request advice from others)

Seeing that I like the music you do, and have a Caparison Dellinger fitted with BK I can at least help a little.

First off letting us know your amp, would be a great help.  That aside, lets focus on the pickups.

I personally like the C-bomb that I have fitted in the bridge of my Dellinger.  It doesn't sound too much like the tone in that clip, but it does have a very unique voicing that has a lot of upper spectrum cut that I think sounds great in a Mahogany axe.  The C-bomb also has a a great lower spectrum vibe too.  That pickup has a nice cut in the top end, without being overbearing, but also a nice round bottom end.  You can definitely get some awesome tones from that PUP - and it is very suitable for Melodic Death Metal.  My Caparison fit's the bill for my Melodic Death/Black metal band.

I imagine that a MM would capture an older In Flames type of tone, but I unfortunately do not have experience with a MM.  I played a guitar with coldsweats in it, for about 10 min; and I really like the brightness and chirp of the pickup.  I still don't have that much experience with it, though.

Maybe someone else can chime in and help the TC?

for the tone in the clips, I would say miracle man, it keeps things suprisingly smooth but still has aggression and has brilliant palm mutes. my experience of the p/up was in a Japanese LP but it nailed a lot of thrash tones and when i tune down to B and took off some gain sounded scary for soilwork.

i think that a forum member (Kride?) has done some soilwork clips with the Holy Diver in a horus so you may want to check them out to see whether you like the tone

I agree, normally I'd recommend a painkiller for that style, but to get close to that anterior tone, (awesome band, saw them support bodom few years back) clip it's definitely miracle man calibrated set which offers that lovely smooth lead tone. Here's a sinergy clip I did with miracle men http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jSxRi3GkyTg

Thanks all for your input! I will be playing through an ENGL Invader, if that helps at all..

Right now, i'm between the Miracle Man, and C-bomb.

I had a C-bomb in a basswood guitar before, and I loved it, yet I can't imagine how it would sound in mahogany. The miracle man has been suggested to me multiple times, yet I just can't take the plunge for some reason. Any other input is appreciated, although if all fails..

it may be time to try the miracle man!

I'm actually looking to try a miracleman too!  Not in a Mahogany guitar, but something a bit brighter.

Take the plunge, on the miracleman; I'm sure you will be happy.  The upside is that BK always seem to retain their value in the after market!

I have a walnut bodied Horus and ive tried 2 different pick ups in it. Painkiller= To bright and trebly.
Holy diver= Tone is good. Amazed at how single notes pop out. Pick up lacks enuff gain. So i think im gonna try a war pig next.

the nailbomb felt hotter than the alnico pig to me (very different guitars, though)
it's louder, edgier and less compressed

or maybe you should try an alnico miracle man
it's a lot like the warpig, but leaning towards the diver voicing

Well, a week later, and further into the process of decision making, I've got another variable.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vKZ-eKBJ9dw

What would you say would suit that tone. I wouldn't want to switch to the neck for any technical riffing, and in this instance, I suppose I would only use a neck pickup for cleans.

So with that being said, which bridge would you say sounds most like the tone here? Again, I'll be using an engl invader.
