Frusciante style tones - maple necked AVRI '57 Strat
« on: July 19, 2011, 06:05:03 PM »
Greetings BKP fans, first post so go easy (and apologies for the essay)

I'm currently on a holiday to the UK, but I live in China where it's quite hard to get pickups.

I've got a 91' AVRI '57 Strat. It's a lovely guitar. Less than a year ago I stripped it out and replaced the stock PU with SD Antiquity Texas Hots. I was actually after the surfers, but what with the language barrier, I ended up with the hots LOL.

Anyhow, much to my disappointment, the middle pickup has simply died on me! I'm seriously unimpressed as they were not cheap.

Now I'm here in Kernow, I can pick up some BKPs.

I'm a big fan of the Chilis amongst others so I'm drawn to the MM's, however my guitar has a maple neck/board so not sure if the MM are best suited to my needs.

Any advice appreciated

Welcome!  :D

I don't know much about the Strat sets, but Apaches are often recommended for maple board Strats.  Or maybe you could consider the '63 Veneer Board set, for something along the lines of the MMs but not quite as bright.
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

The 63 veneerd board set is indeed an option. However, my IT's can do Frusciante-tones as well. They're in a swampash-strat with an ebony fretboard. Just roll the vol.knob a tad back and they sparkle in the best way. They handle gain very well.

the Mothers Milk clips are the ones out of all the Strat clips that make me consider getting a Strat - and I dislike Strats, though not quite as much as Roo dislikes Teles

Congrats! Just to add: I have the MM's now sitting in an ash HSS-Fender American Series strat and they are true classics. Instant Frusciante. My MXG custom swampashstrat has a Crawler/IT's set. The IT's sound a bit fuller, with more low end. If you roll the vol.knob a tad back, they can get close to MM's. I would say the MM's have more woodiness to them. The MM-neckpickup sounds awesome. Both very nice pickups.

I would have to say mother milk.  I got mother milk middle and neck in one of my guitars. They are great and you can really get that chilli tone from them. Never tried them with a maple neck but image they would be great still.
I have got  other guitars with apaches, sultans and irish tours in. For me they are all great but mothermilk would be my pick for Chillis tone. They are all good so you cannot go far wrong.

Finally got the '63s loaded in the strat this weekend and had a small band practice last night.

Unfortunately, I wasn't using my Orange set up, was going through my friends Boogie combo so can't really judge the crunch/distortion sound yet.

Very impressed with the clean sound though, loads of tight snap when we were running through some funky numbers such as 'superstition' and 'funky music'. Looking forward to playing through the Orange. I'll also record some clips through NI guitar rig.

Ahh, that's funny. My coverband plays that funky stuff too. I like the MM's for that.

Would ITs be too hot for that Fruciante tone? Also I don't so-far get what Josh Klinghoffer's tone is... I think it's just... Chorus

IT's can deliver Frusciante-tones, just roll the vol.knob a tad back, which will cut some bass and lowmids and your in MM-territory. I see the IT's as overwound MM's with more bass and a bit more mids.
