Not getting on with the Sinner when clean
« on: September 21, 2011, 02:44:08 PM »
I've got a 68 reissue japan Strat that I've kitted out with a Trilogy Suite in the neck and a Sinner in the bridge. For high gain tones both are great, I can't complain but when it comes to cleans I find the Sinner to sound too compressed and honky like I've got a half c--ked wah on. I've got 11 - 56's on set with a medium height action, but I'm just not liking the Sinner for cleans.

I love the Trilogy Suite for cleans so would a Trilogy Suite for the bridge be a good idea? or should I look more towards something like an Irish Tour?

I know what you mean by honky and wah like.  I had both the trilogy and sinner bridge in the same strat and found the trilogy to sound even more honky and nasally.  The trilogy though is a bit more open for cleans.  Overall, I greatly preferred the sinners and think its clean is pretty good, but not great.  But if you don't like the sinner's cleans you probably won't like the trilogy's either.

An IT in the bridge paired with Trilogies would provide quite a difference in output and character. It's not the combination that immediately comes to mind. Anyway, if you're used to a Sinner, it will be a dramatic step back in high gain tones. A lower output singlecoil can not produce the modern leadtones of the ultrahot Sinner. I like my IT's for cleans and vintagehot soloing, but in both my strats I have a humbucker in the bridge for leads (Crawler and VHII). Maybe you can compromise by replacing the middle- en neckpickups by  IT's or Slowhands. They sure are good for clean stuff.
