Best Pickup Combos?
« on: September 25, 2011, 05:53:27 AM »
Hi guys, just wondering what your favourite combinations of pickups are :D
I personally am a bit of a picky picker I guess, and I like a lot of space for thrashing out with. That's why I like Teles, heaps of space to just pick happily, along with that amazingly useful middle position sound.
Feel free to post your opinions!

P.S If you had to have a guitar with ONE P90 and ONE MiniHumbucker, which positions would you out which in? Assuming that cavities are no problem? I want the creamy P90 neck and kerrrrangy MiniHumbucker bridge, but at the same time want that growly P90 in the bridge and the sparkly clean MiniHumbucker in the neck!
Guitars:
Warmoth Jazzmaster
Telecaster Standard
Ibanez RG370
Ibanez GSZ

Amp: Fender Hot Rod

- Any HSS-set will give you versatility when your a stratman. I like my Crawler/IT's and VHII/MM's in my strats. They have a different character and that's good for a change/the inspiration or the music you want to play.
- The BG52-set is a great allroundset for a tele.
- I like Mules in Les Pauls.

- P90 in the bridge and mini-hb in the neck is the obvious (balanced) combi.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

Cool, great answer! I like those preferences too
Well what I meant instead of MiniHumbucker was filtertron style. Unless that makes little difference?

Still P90 in the bridge. The filtertron will provide nice lush clean necktones, the P90 the roar you want in a bridgepickup.

Ok cool, thanks man
So I'm guessing that would be a more versatile way to go.
Just out of curiosity, when would you ever put a P90 in the neck and a filtertron in the bridge? What styles would that cover instead? I've been doing a lot of research but can't find as were to the more unusual "what if" questions

I would not. Either I would choose a calibrated P90-set or a Filtertron-set. Just bec the middleposition will be in balance. That's my preference. Your idea sounds interesting though. There a lot of tele's with a tele-bridge for bite and a P90 for warm thick necktones. A Filterton in the bridge will provide twang for sure and the P90 warmer necktones. Don't know how the middlepostion will sound. Important is that the neckpickup does not overpower the bridge.
