Pickup For 80s Metal Tone
« on: October 19, 2011, 12:59:25 PM »
Hi Guys, sorry for my english im from Portugal.

Well i bought a new Kramer Striker 211 Custom with Floyd Rose it has a Mahogany body w/ Flame Maple top and
Maple neck and maple fingerboard.

Im looking for a humbucker for my guitar that can nail that 80s metal tone , in the styles of Dokken, Ratt, Motley Crue and if possible that can nail a bit of Megadeth/Metallica tone too.

And for the neck and middle pickups im very undicided between the irish tours and the trilogy suites, i want a nice clean sound like Scorpions,Def Leppard, etc, but i want them too, to do that high gain solos like George Lynch did with that great high end bite and harmonics.

Regrets.
Hope You Can Help Me.

Welcome to the forum!  :D

I'm sure someone with more knowledge than me will chime in, but I think the go-to humbuckers for hair metal are VHII, Holydiver or maybe Rebel Yell.

Not so sure about single-coils, the Trilogies would be a good choice for '80s hard rock but the Irish Tours might be a better match with those medium-output humbuckers.
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

Well, for the bridge I am guessing the Holy Diver is a save bet, as it is pure 80s metal from what I hear.

The neck....I donīt know.
BKPs in use: 10th set / RY set / Holy Diver b, Emerald n / Crawler bridge, Slowhand mid MQ neck/ Manhattan n
On the sidelines: Stockholm b / Suppermassive n, Mule n, AM set, IT mid

For a guitar with that much maple on it I would prefer the Holydiver over the Rebel Yell bridge.

Trilogy Suite would be a good match. Check out these reviews

As others have said the Holy Diver is pretty much in that ballpark.

If you are particularly worried about the metal side, the Miracle Man would do a great early George Lynch sound, similar to when he used the Seymour Duncan Distortion (SH-6).
Current BKPs: Miracle Man, Nailbomb, Juggernaut, VHII
Past BKPS: Holy Diver, Trilogy Suite, Sinner, Black Dog

Look at Miracle Man for Lynch and Zakk Wylde, Mick Mars, Warren De Martini
Cold Sweat will also work well too
Scorpions
MM or CS will work ok for Rudy Schenker tones although I feel for Matthias you need something like a Mule or Riff Raff - maybe an Emerald.

Trilogy suites will match up with these ok too

I reckon Miracle Man + Trilogies for that.

The Trilogy will sound good for your cleans, made with good materials and scatter wound as it is.

Thanks for the answers guys.

Now im a bit undicided between the Holy Diver and the Miracle Man, can the Holy Diver Cover The Tones Of Zakk Wylde too?

I think i will prefer the Holy Diver because my main style is 80s Metal like dokken, ratt,  but i still want a more raw tone like zakk wylde, dave mustaine,etc..is HD capable of doing both Styles?

HD smoother & fatter, fluid and smooth top end
MM more defined, harder, more cutting top end

I would probably give the HD the edge, because it is just more 80s metal overall. But if Zakk Wylde is what you really want, then the MM is the way to go.

I would definitely say either the miracle man or cold sweat both will cover what you want and are ideal if you want a dokken ish vibe for you main tone as you have stated

I like the holy diver better, but for that stuff, you want a cold sweat, maybe a miracle man, as feline recommended
Riff Raff, Mules, Black Dog, VHII's, Cold Sweat
