pups for Ibanez RG7420?
« on: November 02, 2011, 01:58:46 PM »
Hey all,
i'm looking at upgrading the pups in my RG7420. I play mostly Metal (various types.. everything from tech to death to thrash) and need a pup that is going to be tight on the low end and not overly harsh on the high end. There's a lot of BKPs that fit that bill :D

I have a Coldsweat bridge in my all mahogany 007 Elite and it is brutal there. How would the coldsweat compare in the RG with its basswood body?

I'm also considering a Nailbomb/CS neck combo or Aftermath set or Aftermath/CS neck and am totally open to suggestions as the Coldsweat (bridge) is the only BKP humbucker I have personal experience with.

Thanks :D

Get the C-Bomb/Coldsweat combo. Bloody awesome. Especially in Basswood from what I've heard :) You may find that the Nailbomb will fit yourself better than the Aftermath to cover a wider range of styles. I found the Aftermath to be too overly tight. Great for djent, but it can get a bit restricting. I find the Nailbomb flows a lot better when playing technically. With the Aftermath, it causes you to play really precise, which can lead your playing to sound very midi.

Yea I'm pretty sure I want a CS in the neck..

what about a Painkiller in the bridge? I've seen a few people very happy with it in 7x2x's :D

I'm leaning towards the C-bomb, but I'm still curious about all the other options lol

Whilst I think the Aftermath/Painkiller are excpetional pickups; the real question is: Do you play Djent? These pickups were designed to be very very VERY tight! I find a few people, when hearing that pickups such as the Nailbomb, aren't as tight as these two, usually get worried that the pickup they had their eye on, won't be tight enough for them. Just so you know, the Nailbomb is still extremely tight. It can still play Djent, but it also has the capabilities to be more versatile within the Metal Genre. The Alnico has more versatility across a wider spectrum, but the Ceramic model is like the 'Ultimate Versatile' metal pickup. I went through the Aftermath and Painkiller and found it way too tight for what I wanted. They were just too clinical and made my breakdowns sound very start and stop. When coming across the Nailbomb, it was like a 'Beautiful Flowing Wine'. I can play everything from Trivium to Bullet to Killswitch to Children of Bodom to Dream Theater. Even Instrumental styles. I really like the midrange growl the Nailbomb gives. Try this: Listen to the first chord on Modern metal clips, and you'll really hear that growl the Nailbomb gives which just doesn't appear in others.

Regarding the Cold Sweat neck. It's a fabulous pickup fullstop :)

You just hit the nail head on.. that range of bands is exactly the range of styles that I like to play, though I do play a few more 'djenty' styles too, Periphery and some of Keith Merrow's stuff/Born of Osiris etc.

Sounds like the C-bomb would be perfect. You've convinced me :D

That's good to hear :) Periphery actually use the Aftermath, but I wouldn't get a pickup just to suit one bands style. The Nailbomb is still capable of playing Djent though. Obviously not as well voiced as the Painkiller/Aftermath in that area. But you won't be sorry with the C-Bomb/Cold Seat set :) Plus you can return them for an exchange if you're not satisfied
