Ibanez rg 2550 bridge pickup for metal?
« on: November 16, 2011, 01:09:51 PM »
Hi everyone!

well i'm looking for a metal pickup for the brige of my ibanez rg 2550.

The guitar has basswood body , floating trem...

i'm using a peavey 5150 head, and a engl blackmore.

I'm looking for pickup that has clarity, note definition from standard tuning to drop C, good note attack, i also want a tight bass response but not to much tight bass response.

I'm looking also for a fat sound, but i do not want  an enormous amount of bass because i think that to much bass will affect the clarity of the sound.

So what pickups do you recommend me?

Painkiller. I love it to bits.

Holydiver, not surgically tight as the Painkiller, nice low end but not too much!

With such gain monster amps as the 5150 and the Engl I would not choose the highest gain pickup around. My recommendation for this specific case would be the Cold Sweat.

I Strongly reccomend the AFTERMATH, I use it in my steinberger with a VHT Pitbull Head and it is killer.  Also rules direct to PA from my POD HD500 pedal.  I tune to Bb so i needed a pickukp that had bass, but not muddy,  I also needed accuracy and articulation, which the AFTERMATH does very very well.  Think of it as a PAINKILLER with smoother Mids, More articulate yet softer highs, and tighter bass response. In fact there is so much detail to the sound that it has made me a better guitar player, "now i hear every mistake that EMGs used to cover up for me."
The pickup is capable of clean sounds as well with a different EQ and less gain.  If it's Metal you're after, then the AFTERMATH is your pickup. Mine is never leaving my guitar, EVER!
I have played guitar for Mortician and now Head Trauma so i am very into the Heavy, This pickup is UBER AGGRESSIVE!
Cheers,
Phantom.

I opted for the Nailbomb and Cold Sweat for metal in my Ibanez S series. The cold sweat in the neck position has nice cleans as well. A nice heavy sound altogether.

Naturally for that type of guitar a pickup that emphasizes the mid range and lower frequencies works well, additionally it shouldn't have a too spikey treble end. The DiMarzio ToneZone is a logic and classic choice for high end RGs.
From the Bareknuckle Range I'd therefore go with

Black Dog
Holy Diver
Nailbomb
Painkiller
(in order of aggressiveness)

based on your wish to have a not too huge low end I'd probably rule the Warpig out. The Miracle Man I'd not recommend either for the reasons above.

I'd personally only have experience with the BD, HD, NB and MM.
Current BKPs: Miracle Man, Nailbomb, Juggernaut, VHII
Past BKPS: Holy Diver, Trilogy Suite, Sinner, Black Dog

Hi everyone and thanks for all your reply's.

But just to clear things, i want to ask  what is the pickup that has a similar sound to emg 81 or seymour duncan actives  but in a better way, and that works perfectly in basswood?

Miracle man has the characteristics you want and is the closest in sound to the EMG

the bass is quite hefty but the high end is more so hefty so it balances out perfectly.

it is also my go to pickup for basswood
