Pickups for my V
« on: August 27, 2011, 12:58:40 AM »
Hey,
I'm changing the pickups on my epiphone korina v. I've decided on bare knuckle as all my guitars are loaded with burstbuckers and i think i need to stop playing it safe.
I've looked into the bare knuckles and i'm finding making this decision really difficult.
I'm stuck between these pickups
The Mule
VHII
Rebel Yells
Crawler

I play mostly hard/classic rock with a crunchy overdrive rather than heavy distortion. I'm really looking for that sort of joe perry tone. I also need a good clean tone
Which would you reccomend?

Mules will do, from classic to hardrock and even metal if needed, but maybe you can consider RiffRaffs too. They have a bit more chime and are quite punchy. I think the Crawler might be on the warm side, I have this on in a swampashstrat, but it wille quite warm and fat in korina. The VHII sits in my other ashstrat. It's good for classic rock/hard rock and cleans up well, it's articulate and dynamic, but it's sounds a little different then a classic PAF to me.  Personally I think of this one as a classic hb for bolt-on-guitars, but that's just my perception. They might do very well in korina. The RY's have quite some output and bright topend. I have no experience with these. Summit: Mules, RiffRaffs and middier Black Dogs will do fine, depending on your guitars natural voice, dark or bright, or balanced. And or course your taste.
Maybe forummember gwEm will chime in, he has a lot of V's.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

I would thoroughly recommend the Riff Raff bridge/Mule neck combination for what you have described. I have a korina V right next to me with that set up and the sound is phenomenal

Well, Korina is supposedly brighter than mahogany, but I second Telerocker here: the Crawler will probably be a bit too warm and fat for a V, and from what I heard of the VHII I don't think it will be PAFish enough for your tastes (now I never played it so take this with a pinch of salt).

Given your reference to Joe Perry I think you want something in the vintage range, so yes, Mules or RiffRaff come to mind. The Mule neck's clean is just amazing, and it has a vering singing / vocal (and definitly vintage) character when you start pushing the amp, The RiffRaff bridge is very clear, bright and punchy and works fine for classic rock  / old school hard rock crunchy tones.  Or perhaps a Black Dog bridge if you're after a more muscular and roaring bridge tone or if your guitar is on the bright side (caveat: never played a Black Dog, but from the clips and what I know of the RiffRaff I think it would work fine on a korina V).

Can't comment on the RY as I never played it...
Have: Crawlers, BGF 50/52s, Mules, ABomb, RiffRaff
Had : Slowhands (n&m), Trilogy (b)

Cheers, the mule/riff raff combo sounds quite tempting!

Sorry for the little threadnomancy.
This would be the same set you advice for a Les Paul? I'd be more headed to his more late tone like in "ain't that a b!tch"...
Thanks,
Fernando

I would definitely stay away from the Crawler as it is too warm and midrange heavy for the Joe Perry stuff. Rebel Yell bridge would have a bit too much output. VHII and Mule would fit the output range but I also think that the Riff Raff may be more appropriate.

I would also include a push-pull pot so you can flip the phase of one pickup to get the both pickups out-of-phase tone that Joe frequently uses.

Cheers Stephan

I have a bridge raff/neck mule in my '73 les paul custom
clearest and most versatile set I ever had (this guitar alone had 7 other BKP's and a couple MCP's)
Riff Raff, Mules, Black Dog, VHII's, Cold Sweat
