What pickups is best suited for a Soulfly tone ?
« on: November 22, 2011, 03:46:55 PM »
Hello,

So, as the title says, I want to know what is the best humbucker pickup to have that sound.
The PU will go in a BC Rich Draco(Bridge humbucker, neck single-coil), mahogany body, maple neck-through, ebony fretboard, played in Drop B.
I'm looking after what we can hear in the Prophecy album, the rhythm guitar, but especially the tone the title-track or Born Again Anarchist. If I could have brutal palm-mute with that, it would be perfect.

I hesitate between a C-Pig(because of the brutal palm-mute) and a Naibomb(I've seen they were the way to go for a Soulfly sound). Am I thinking in the right way or there is another pickup that would be best than those two?
And don't mind about the clean, my neck pickup(a stock twin-rail, don't know the brand name) do this really well.

I would think Nailbomb for that, but should add that I haven't used the nailbomb myself so take my suggestion with a big pinch of salt.

I concur with the NB-recommendation.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

Well, it seems I'll get the C-Bomb. In fact, I just found a clip of Nailbomb where I heard almost the same sound I wanted.
I'll probably get the Nailbomb Etch cover, it looks awesome.

Max is using Duncan SH6 Distortion.  Best thing would be email the guys and ask if they make an equivalent.

I know that(Max and sh-6) and I saw the equivalent of the sh-6 was the Painkiller(the closest actually) but it's a more mid-present, djent pickup and I'm not a fan of the 'djent' sound. The sound I want is more in the mid-scooped category and I said I found a clip on the forum(posted in 2006) that was almost what I was looking for.

And when I said nailbomb I meant nailbomb, not ceramic-nailbomb :)

Scooping for the lose, too. It sounds great when you play in the bedroom on your own, but in the band context, it's the mids that give the guitars bite and aggression and help you cut through the mix. Scooped guitar sounds in bands tend to sound utterly rubbish :) JMHO

I thought that the Nailbomb was based on Max's Sepultura/Nailbomb era sound

In my opinion  for certain things I choose the Miracle Man for when I want to have a tone I would otherwise  have used the Duncan Distortion for in the past
However the Painkiller does have a lot going for it too - just has more upfront mid frequencies

miracle man or nailbomb
the c-bomb sounds like a perfect in between alternative

sh-6 sucks, by the way
way too muddy and compressed compared to any BKP
Riff Raff, Mules, Black Dog, VHII's, Cold Sweat

Must be the right choice, I mean it is named after Max Cavaleras sound.
You will be very happy with it, I am sure.
