P90s for my Les Paul?
« on: November 24, 2011, 07:10:26 PM »
First Post!

Anyway, I bought a Gibson 1960s Tribute Studio Les Paul a few months back, before the Dark Backs/Baked Maple Boards. It has P90s, which I love the tone of, but I want a slightly cleaner neck pup with more clarity, and a meaner bridge pup. I'm currently considering a Pig 90 in the bridge and a Nantucket in the neck, but I was wondering if anybody with experience could give me some insight.

Generally Genre/Tone is 60s and 70s Classic Rock. Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, The Who, Queen, up through to Thin Lizzy, Judas Priest, and Iron Maiden, though I don't expect to sound like those three as well with a mahogany-bodied P90-equipped guitar. I'll be playing through an Egnater Tweaker 88, a silverface Fender Bassman, and once in a while through my roommate's 6505+ when I feel like being silly.

This will be my first set of BKPups, I've heard nothing but good about them. :) Any insight is appreciated!

For those tones I would pick a Supermassive in the bridge.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

Unfortunately I don't have experience with the P90s yet, but you should definitely send the guys at Bare Knuckle an email. Since you're generally looking for 60s and 70s classic rock, the Nantuckets seem to be the best choice, as they are described as being classically voiced and so should be great for those tones. Also, vintage style pickups can be surprisingly good at metal; Nolly has used a 7 string Emerald for some incredibly heavy, modern metal tones to great effect. I think he's even recorded a clip of Mules doing heavy metal as well.

I dig this thread coz I have listenened samples of Stockholm,Supermasive even heavy clip of P-90pig Iīm liking them a lot...I still didnīt find the right pickup for my LP what cover all waters from punk/hardcore experimental(refused, knut, breach),through sludge stoner doom (high on fire,COC,16,mastodon) till full shred...I like unique sound of P-90 style pickups but can those pickups handle palm mute similar to humbucker?Thanx
have CWP,MM...had AM,CS,VHII,NB,PK,HD...
