Advice on an HSS set for my 80s Kramer.
« on: December 02, 2011, 12:30:24 PM »
Hi there, I'm looking to replace the pickups in my old Kramer Nightswan II, and was hoping to ask for some input as to the kind of BKPs that might make sense for my needs.

Currently it's got a Dimarzio ToneZone in bridge position, a nameless rail in the middle (sounds like a piezo!), and a Dimarzio rail (not sure what model) in the neck. I quite like the TZ, but it's time for a change, and would especially like to improve upon my neck and middle tones.

Bridge will be used predominantly for modern rock OD tones, as well as modern metal. The only BKPs I've owned before were Nolly's old Coldsweats, and whilst I loved them at the time, I'm really looking for something with significantly less output now. As stated, I like the TZ, but would be happy to go for slightly less output than that, too (I'm thinking that "vintage hot" is probably closest to my needs/desires, but some of the less aggressive "contemporary" pups might make sense too).

Neck will be used predominantly for warm cleans with a little bite, but occasionally for relatively high-gain lead tones, too. In terms of the kind of clean tone I like, some of Opeth's more recent stuff is probably a decent-enough reference point. (Otherwise, here's an example of the kind of tone I dialled in with the Dimarzio rail: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NmaBGkAKDrM - evidently I'm not trying to replicate that, but I guess it serves to show the general type of tone I like)

Middle will be used (not a huge amount, I suspect!) for bright cleans, and... Well, brighter cleans, really! Not overly fussed about middle position, other than to provide more tonal options.

The guitar's mahogany-bodied with a (bolt-on) maple neck and an ebony fretboard. In general, it's a relatively warm guitar - certainly no way near as bright as some of the alder and ash-bodied guitars I've owned.

Sorry to drone on, would greatly appreciate anyone's input!

Greetings - and welcome  :)

I would suggest a VHII for the bridge, which is a bright-ish not-too-hot-PAF, and maybe a pair of Mothers Milks for the neck and bridge.  In your Kramer, I reckonn they'll be the business!

Edit:

Tim and the boys have some advice here, and they suggest Irish Tours with a VHII.  On reflection, I'd go with that  :D

Thanks very much for the input, Twinfan! Greatly appreciated. Was wondering about the VHII, because I've never knowingly heard it in anything other than the neck position (sound clips on the website aside, of course). It certainly seems to make sense in terms of the kind of output I'm looking for. As it happens, going on clips alone the Irish Tours sound best to my ears, in comparison to the other singlecoils.

So, I reckon I will very probably go down the VHII + IT route, and worst case scenario at least I should have a better idea of what direction I want to go in... Cheers!

I have a miracle man and 2 trilogy suite in an american deluxe strat, the miracle man is probably not what your looking for since is a hot humbucker, but the trilogy sweet are very warm and not thin sounding yet very percussive single coils (not vintage sounding at all).

I'm with other members recommendations for the bridge. I have the VHII in an ashstrat and is a totally vintagehot rocky, but balanced pickups. Cleans up nice and is very articulate and dynamic. I think the MM's are too woody for what you describe. I would pick the IT's in this case. I have them in an swampashstrat and they very versatile and provides extra weigth in the bass compared to the MM's. If you turn the vol.knob a tad back you will get in MM-terrority anyway.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

Well, that's settled then! Thanks very much indeed for the extra votes of confidence, and cheers for the welcome Fred D! What a majestic name, eh?

I will report back when my fingers are covered in the seemingly inevitable soldering iron burns - no matter how many times I've used one, still can't seem to get my head around the fact that touching stupidly hot things is a bad idea, haha.
