Studio monitors

Looking to get a pair of monitors. What do people recommend - has anyone tried the M-audio studiophile av40 ? (Gives you an idea of the ballpark I am looking to spend)

I recommend you dont worry about the actual monitors all that much and treat the living shitee out of your room. Monitors are correctly acompanied by 10 metric shitee-tonnes of rockwool and open-celled foam.

Also, adam A-series or yamaha HS.

Edit: headphones you know well, at low volume, are preferable (to me at least) than low end monitors in an untreated room. My default recommendation of ATHM50s ftw.

Sound advise above but for somebody looking to spend £100 on monitors perhaps acoustically tuning the room might be a step to far.

If you sit pretty close to them and place them on something to isolate them from the table I think they would be fine, M Audio gear always seems good for the money to me.  A good set of headphones to go with them is a good call so you can isolate the music from the room acoustics and get some perspective but on their own they should be fine.

If you are recording really bass heavy music, you might want bigger drivers and a few more watts though....

Thanks - I have a decent set of headphones for editing (although they are probably not neutral enough for critical work). I kind of wanted the monitors for a few reasons including guitar rig and general pc speakers as well as editing.... When it comes to sound editing I am a complete novice/dabbler/numpty :-). I should have been more explicit in what I wanted them for...

Thanks for the advice though - you're definitely right - at that price, headphones are the most sensible for editing...
