yeah another help me thread
« on: January 11, 2012, 03:32:52 PM »
I have a les paul classic.its really light weight and almost feels like a toy sometimes.I have tried different pickups in it but can find a good sound to save my life.I have tried riff raffs but they didn't have enough umph. I tried a warpig and it was missing the mids.I tried a s.d. lynch and it was kinda hollow sounding.I play 80's rock/ metal mostly ( lynch, metallica, alice in chains).but also into newer rock.I normally use emgs, jb's and  lynchs'.I've been looking at the nailbomb @ holydiver.there's so many good sound rock/metal pickups from b.k. I can't decided because this les paul isn't a topical les paul in tone.kinda thin sounding.

It sounds as if the guitar is the potential problem in this equation. Some very light guitars lack frequencies in the guitar's fundamental range which makes it sound thin. If your guitar is one of those it will be very difficult to get the sound you're after, and any pickup purchase may not be worth the expense. Unless you are very comfortable in playing this guitar or otherwise have a strong bond with it the best option may be to sell it (slow market at the moment though) and get something which is closer to your dream tone to begin with.

I have tried riff raffs but they didn't have enough umph. I tried a warpig and it was missing the mids.I tried a s.d. lynch and it was kinda hollow sounding.

I haven't played any of these pickups but none of them is known for overly strong midrange. In the BKP range I would look at the Holydiver or Crawler for warm mids or Aftermath if you want a more aggressive overall tone. Alnico Nailbomb may also be an option.

I play 80's rock/ metal mostly ( lynch, metallica, alice in chains).but also into newer rock.

This would have led me to recommend the Cold Sweat. It should have more "oommph" than the Riff Raff but in your particular guitar it will likely sound too midscooped.

I normally use emgs, jb's and  lynchs'.

Never played the Lynch but the EMG 81 and JB. The JB to me is thin and muddy. The EMG 81 is even thinner.

I've been looking at the nailbomb @ holydiver.

You are basically looking in the right place.

It would be helpful to know a bit more about your set up (amp, pedals etc.).

Cheers Stephan

Nailbomb or Holy Diver. I was asthonished that the Warpig missed mids. It is bass- and midheavy and would probably a tad to much in most Les Pauls. Perhaps something is wrong with the wiring, capacitors or pots.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

My gear right now is a mesa cabnet with v30's.amp wise ....I play mostly a jcm900 4100 but also a splawn qr and a baron dhg. Pedals a delay, phaser, chorus and flange ....the warpig's mids sounded more lower mids to me.a little to much bass. I like the saturation or breakup it has...the riff raff wasn't to bad but it lacked nuts to me.it would do acdc good but not great.well in this guitar anyways.

If the guitar is a bit lacking in the midrange department, even a mid-heavy pickup will not make a large difference. Instead, try to focus on what the guitar does well. For example, I learned the hard way (i.e. spending lots of money on the wrong pickups) that in my not very mid heavy guitar a Miracle Man worked great - and a great deal of people have mentioned that maple strats and Miracle Men work great, yet, it is not a mid heavy pickup at all.

That said, I think the Nailbomb is a good pickup that fits in many "problematic" guitars.
Current BKPs: Miracle Man, Nailbomb, Juggernaut, VHII
Past BKPS: Holy Diver, Trilogy Suite, Sinner, Black Dog
