Warpig magnet question
« on: January 23, 2012, 07:51:42 PM »
Forum n00b-1st post, I just got my hands on a used Warpig, but it's the alnico version and I want to switch the mag to a ceramic. Does anyone know for sure if the C-Pig has a normal sized magnet or does it use the oversized magnet like a Duncan Distortion/SuperD?

I have played on a C-Pig before, and that's the sound I'm trying to duplicate. I've got both types and lots of experience with taking pickups apart, just want to know which to use, it sounded like a big mag... but if it's not the big mag will be way overkill.

It's going in an SG into a Boogie MarkIII and will be used for sludgy/techy stuff like a cross between The Secret and Ed Gein.

Thanks.

nice style. my best friend toured with the secret last year :)
They use a les paul custom through a hm-2. So my advice: Hm-2

I went ahead and put in the normal sized magnet since that's what my Ironman sounds best with. It goes in tonight.

didn't have the ceramic pig, but all other ceramic BKP's (miracle man, cold sweat, aftermath) I had seemed to have thick magnets (4 mm?)
I may be wrong, though
it doesn't mean a thinner magnet wouldn't sound just as good, but only different

Actually, that only goes into one of the amps, so he mixes it up a bit. At least that's how he had it set up when we played with them. Good guys too though, when they came by last time with Kvelertak I got royally hammered with the vocalist and Phil from Toxic Holocaust. Good times!

That said, the A-Pig in an SG works perfectly fine! I had one in my SG-I for a while and liked it a whole bunch. It does well in brighter guitars. Up until recently though, I had a C-pig in the same SG and liked that a tiny bit better, but that is mainly because the guitar is slightly on the darker side for an SG. In a normal SG, the A-pig will be perfect, ESPECIALLY for that style!

After playing it I'm pretty certain it's supposed to be a big mag, with the small one it's not near as chunky as I remember, incredible clarity though, and really bright for a 21.5K pickup, I think the coils are mismatched a bit. I'll pop it open again tonight and report back.

I didn't try it with the A5, but I had my mind set on the ceramic version, it's not hard to swap them, so I might still try it.

You euro dudes are lucky, lot's of good bands over there.

Project is in the early stages, no name as of yet.

Almost all ceramics are C8 in pickups, only older Gibson pickups used C5, that I know of. The small mag I used is from an Evo, the big mag is the center mag from an invader (I like to mess with stuff, kind of a hobby).

If you're playing in that style, then ferchrissakes keep a brutha posted! I play in a band called Hexis myself, so not surprisingly I love that stuff like a fat kid loves cake.

Also, tinkering rules. I recently took over some defective, microphonic old pickups from Madsakre's ancient BC Rich NJ Mockingbird, and I'm definitely going to be doing some experimenting on those. It's always great fun to learn new skills :D
