PUPS Selection Help (Stoner, Doom, etc.)
« on: January 29, 2012, 04:13:00 PM »
Hello everyone,

I've been following what everyone has been saying on the topic of the best BNP for sabbathy stoner rock to more aggressive doom. I recently contacted BNP to ask them about this, and they suggested a nailbomb in the neck and a Warpig in the bridge. The Warpigs certain seem awesome and fully capable of doing this music, but my concern is that the contemporary PUPS might be too hot. I've found that for this sort of music its best to get mid output PUPS, but crank the MV on your amp, and since my amp has a sort of Sunn/Orange hybrid power section, I can get some really great vintage fuzz tones that compliment that style of music. So, given that background, do you think that Warpigs/Nailbomb is the way to go? I was thinking Black Dogs might be a good fit: mid output PUP, darker, throaty, midrange. Thanks for your help.

Oh, and I am playing a Les Paul Custom. The amp about which I mentioned is made by a company called Hovercraft in the US, if that helps.

Yes, Black Dogs are probably the second choice, with their dark and heavy midrange. I think they would work great in a Les Paul Custom.
Current BKPs: Miracle Man, Nailbomb, Juggernaut, VHII
Past BKPS: Holy Diver, Trilogy Suite, Sinner, Black Dog

I'd go with the Black Dogs, since Doom and Stoner are kind of dark music styles, and usually in kind of low tunings. With low tunings you need to turn back the gain a bit to increase clarity. So I guess a mid output pup, would work well, and would make it easier to sculpt your sound. But it's all a player preference..

I don't think an alnico pig is TOO hot
it does sound bassier, bigger and growlier than a stock gibson 498t, but it cleans up better in most situations, specially through gain

the black dog is more around low output, compared to other brands, than medium output
a little hotter than a '57 classic, for example
Riff Raff, Mules, Black Dog, VHII's, Cold Sweat
