Nolly Rebel Yell with double row of screws? vs Blackdog?
« on: February 04, 2012, 09:13:04 PM »
Hey guys, just got an awsome PRS custom 24 with an ebony fretboard. Stock 09 59 pickups are too low output for my taste.
Basically, im looking for a pickup that can cover 70's rock(zepelin, deep purple, hendrix) on steroids and 80's instrumental rock/shred.
This guitar looks very vintage and i want to keep that vibe in the sound so i dont want something too modern sounding, i like an open and clear top end and punch for those 80's punchy chords but enough warmth and thickness so solo notes dont sounds too thin. I want enough compression/tightness(can use my boost pedal for that) to play stuff like dokken, ozzy, iron maiden,scorpion,whitesnake...

Im thinking VHII, Blackdog or Rebel yell but i fear Rebel yell will be too bright in my guitar with the ebony board and light weight.
How is the double row of screws influencing the tone of a pickup? Would it make it bigger/less top? I know Nolly have one and i like his tone on his youtube clip where he do a scar simetery solo.

I have the Rebel Yell in a LP Custom with an ebony fretboard and I don't find it too bright. If you are afraid of too much brightness consider the Holydiver bridge and the Cold Sweat neck.

Cheers Stephan

VHII sounds like a safe bet
search for hunter's clips on tonefinder.com (also jaeger28 on youtube and soundcloud)

holy diver should work too
Riff Raff, Mules, Black Dog, VHII's, Cold Sweat

The output of the VHII will be pretty similar to the 59/09s you already have.

If you want hotter, I'd go for the Holydiver set or the popular Holydiver bridge/Cold Sweat neck combination.

I really like what i heard from the vhii...it seems clearer than the prs 09 59 set.Wich is something i like. Is the holydiver similar to the vhii but with more saturation?  Im not wanting a lot of saturation but an open and clear pickup that stay clear enough under gain.

the diver is middier and more compressed
more like later eddie van halen, doug aldrich and  jake e. lee than jimmy page, randy rhoads or early michael schenker (UFO)
not similar to the VHII in my understanding, but they're both great hard rock pickups
Riff Raff, Mules, Black Dog, VHII's, Cold Sweat

Thx for the great info! Do you know if the vhii neck go well with the Diver bridge? Im pretty sure the vhii neck is what i want and im very tempted to order the whole calibrated set and if ever im not satisfied with the bridge i could exchange it for the Diver bridge.
