Les Paul Axcess..Which BKP?
« on: April 10, 2012, 08:06:16 PM »
I've always played Historic or Standard LP's but the weight has seen me transfer across to an Axcess which from the front looks the same but has half the depth of mahogany. This has helped with a featherweight guitar but unfortunately I have lost some of the famous grunt, lower mid of my old standard.
I'm looking for vintage hot with at least the neck pickup being able to be coil tapped. My thoughts are the Mule, or even Black Dogs.
What would you recommend.

Abraxas bridge, will give you that grunt back.

I'd go with something hotter than the Abraxas neck though, maybe something around 9k.

Maybe an Emerald neck? That's around 9k and will do beautiful lead tones.

I think all of the vintage hot ones can be a bit bright in a bright guitar. I´d rather look into the contemporary range if you want the fatness back.
Maybe Rebel Yell? Best pup for a les paul, has great weight in its tone and splits amazingly well.

I'd have thought a Rebel Yell would be somewhat brighter than an Abraxas or Black Dog.

I think the perception of RY's being an overly bright pickup are rather false. It's like a fine amp; messing around with it alot and finding the sweet spot. If you EQ your amp a bit and find a height that you like, you will only find awesome tone.

Well I´ve had the black dog as well, it was much brighter than the RY.
The RYs treble is more smooth. It also has a lover resonant peak, which makes it fatter sounding.

Well I think that an Abraxas in the bridge is a good call but I'd also suggest either Cold Sweat or Holydiver as contemporary alternatives.

A calibrated Abraxas-set will be good. You get hot PAF-tones and the Abraxas is capable of doing modern styles too. This one will beef up a lightweight LP. Splitted tones are nice too. If you want a warmer neckpickup that splits well, have a look at the Crawler.

Yup, the crawler might be a good neck pup if you dig the A4 sound.
It was muddy in my LP though.

You want the Crawler only when the LP has quite a bright trimbre. It's one of the darkest hb-neckpickups in the BKP-range.
