pickups for my first built Warmoth
« on: April 02, 2012, 03:49:04 PM »
Greetings all!

After reading the forums and doing research I just wanted to post to confirm/deny some suppositions. I am going to be entering several uncharted territories as I am currently building my first guitar and I am looking into BKPs [cause I want the first done right, darn it!].

The guitar itself has a mahogany neck / body with ebony fingerboard and SS 6150 frets. In my time scouring the forums, it seems that Miracle man and Nailbomb are the "go to" pickups for Grunge, Hard/Alt Rock and Metal (Disturbed, Breaking Ben, Lacuna Coil, STP, etc) but I also saw that mahogany seems to have an adverse effect of both of those pickups.

While I am not looking for a 100% perfect "one size fits all" into the aforementioned genres, does anyone have a particular recommendation for something in the melodic Hard/Alt Rock/Metal area for mahogany?

Hopefully that all made sense...  :?

I tried an A-Bomb in my guitar and didn't like it BUT I do think it would work well in mahogany. I haven't tried a C-Bomb but I see no reason why that wouldn't work too. The Aftermath might be worth a look too.

As it would seem, I did look into "Aftermath" shortly after I posted. Been listening to several posted clips (here and youtube [the tim mills demos]) and would it be a silly suggestion to go with a Aftermath bridge and MM neck? I do love the sound both give but I get this feeling it wouldn't be the same together.

Thanks!

Loads of people mix and match pickups. My PRS is going to have a Holydiver bridge and Emerald neck and that was Tim's suggestion. There's no problem unless the pickups concerned have wildly differing outputs so I suppose I wouldn't be in a rush to pair a Warpig bridge with a Stormy Monday neck. The concern with your mix is that the neck version is more powerful than the bridge I think but DC resistance isn't everything so someone else may be able to shed more light on it. Just make sure you've been listening to the MM neck as I believe it's quite different to the bridge version.

Fair enough, just making sure that the Aftermath / MM combo is at least coherent. I shall continue my research with this new info.

Thanks a bunch!

Try investigating the Cold Sweat neck pickup. It's probably the most popular neck pickup BKP do and will be a good match in power for the Aftermath. I suspect it will match better than the Miracle Man.

The ABomb bridge works JustFine(tm) in my (rather dark) SG, but yes, common wisdom here is that it's kind of a hit-or-miss choice.
Have: Crawlers, BGF 50/52s, Mules, ABomb, RiffRaff
Had : Slowhands (n&m), Trilogy (b)
