Hey Guys, Looking For A New Tele Pickup...
« on: April 20, 2012, 11:01:51 PM »
Hey, guys. I'm new to the forum, though I've lurked here before. Nice to finally post, even if it is as a newbie begging for help.     :D

So, I'm looking for new pickups for my Mexican Telecaster. It's got an alder body and a maple neck and fretboard. I mostly play heavier styles of music, but I don't really use a tonne of distortion.

I'm not really a huge fan of this band, but I'd like to get as close to this tone as possible...

From reading the website, I was leaning towards the Blackguard Flat '52, but I think the Boss looks really cool, too. It doesn't have to be one of those two, though. I'd appreciate your expert opinions, insights and advice, fellas. :)

Hi and welcome.
I would pick the BG50 for that.

Interesting. You mean the Blackguard Flat '50, right? How does that compare to the Flat '52?

And thanks for the welcome, by the way. :)

Welcome from me too. I also have a MIM tele- mine is the 1950's version and has Country Boys. I hesitate to suggest them only from the point of view that they are vintage and you might think perhaps that one of the later pickups, such as the BG50's, would be better. In fact I'd probably agree with that except that I have no direct knowledge of them.
What I can tell you is that currently my tele is my main gig guitar and can crank it out if required.
But like I say, I'd canvas other opinion beforehand.

I have the BG52 (actually the old version of the BG50 to make things complicated  :) ) To my ears it sounds snappier and less heavy  then the BG50 which has more mids and bass. Did you listen the clips of the BG50?

Thank you for the welcome, as well.

Don't worry about suggesting vintage style gear. Even back when I was playing much heavier music (punk, hardcore, a little metal, etc) I always preferred lower output, more vintage voiced gear. The Seymour Duncan '59 was my favourite pickup back then. I don't use a lot of gain, either. When I want to sound heavy, I prefer to get that tone from actually playing heavily, rather than piling on a shedload of distortion and compression. I usually run my amp clean and get my dirt from pedals.

Having said that, I think the Country Boys might be a little too bright for me. I'm running a humbucker in the neck, so it can be tricky to balance the tones from both pickups. I'll definitely read a bit more about them, though. Thanks for the input. :)

I guess it's time to come clean then. I actually have a BG50 in my guitar at the moment. I didn't mention that in the OP because I wanted to see if it got a lot of recommendations and therefore the problem most likely lay with the rest of my gear or my inability to dial it in properly. I might try switching the 250k volume pot for a 500k to see if that makes the difference I want before investing in a whole new pickup. Maybe I just have a particularly mellow sounding Tele, I dunno. It's the only guitar of that type that I've really gotten to know.

Your description of the BG52 interests me because I'd prefer a pickup with more snap and twang and perhaps a little more treble. The BG50 can get heavy, but not the same kind of unmistakably Tele heavy that's in the song I posted.

And yeah, I listened to the clips on the site but, to be honest, I actually can't hear a lot of difference between the BG50 and BG52 through my cr@ppy computer speakers.

Thanks again for posting, fellas. :)

BG52, i have it in my tele and for stuff that need to be heavy but not metal, it's the best pickup. It does metal too, and rock and jazz obviously, but my BG52 tele is my go too guitar for that kind of heavy and pretty meaty but with a side of twang-tone.

The BG52 can rock out proper, it has just more edge and less mids then the BG50. If you want a tad darker tone, just roll the volumeknob a tad back.
