Brightening up an Ibanez Saber 7-string.
« on: April 26, 2012, 09:02:56 AM »
Back in Ye Olden Dayes, I put a C-Pig7 in my beloved Ibanez S7420. I was guided onto that one by the lovely BKP support team since I wanted something for that scuzzy, dirty and evil old school Death Metal sound (on steroid) like for instance Impetuous Ritual and the like. It has worked more than perfectly for that, but now I want to try something a little different.

My current band situation calls for something a slight bit different too. It's a grind band, pretty no-frills more or les, with only one guitar. Tunings are Drop C on 6-strings, and A standard on 7's.

The 6-string is my swamp ash Warmoth tele, with an A-pig in the bridge. This has a whole lot more bite to it, and I'd like the two guitars to be more or less in the same ballpark tonally. The S7420 is a mahogany guitar with a floyd, which of course explains why it's the darker sounding guitar of the two, although it's ostensibly the brighter pickup.

Low end won't be that important compared to brightness and treble bite, since the rig I'm using is very bassy. I was thinking something along the lines of a Cold Sweat which I've tried and really liked. I haven't tried one in a Mahogany guitar though, so I'd like to know how it behaves in one. Another possibility would be something like the Emerald. I haven't tried one of those though, but I remember Nolly being all up in arms over it.

The ideal sound is harsh, either scooped by nature or responding well to slightly scooped settings. The best example would probably be the tone on the albums "Terrifyer" and "Phantom Limb" by Pig Destroyer, for what it's worth.

Looking forward to hearing your opinions, lads!

I guess Painkiller, though I'm don't have experience with it. Let the metalplayers enter the room.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

Well, the Painkiller is always a good, stable choice. But honestly I am feeling a bit more adventurous here :D

Why not try the Black Hawks then? They sound like they do most things and would suit what you want, though I obviously haven't tried them myself.
BKP owned:

Bridge - Emerald; Cold Sweat; Crawler; A-Bomb; Holydiver; Miracle Man; Sinner; Trilogy Suite

Neck - Emerald; Cold Sweat; Crawler; Holydiver; Sinner; Trilogy Suite

Blackhawks are definitely a contender here, yes :)

I'm also considering the Riff Raffs. It's confusing with so many nice things to choose from!

So, after long consideration, I've decided to go for the cold sweat. Now the only concern is the cosmetics!
