but even if it plays like a pig, how could you resist buying a guitar with cactus and steers heads up the fret board.

I do understand exactly what you mean!

But - this will sound ridiculous, but bear with me - sometimes in those cases I stop and think about it and realise I could actually make do by finding some good photos rather than spending two grand on the guitar itself (I know that sounds like literal "guitar porn", but it does kinda work!)
trouble is, i like to touch!

Just lurk around guitar shops - go in and buy a couple of picks or a set of strings, then touch all you want!

It works better the older you get, too!  So long as you look like you might have a bit of money, guitar shop assistants are much less suspicious....

Yep, but sooner or later we want to add a decent Gretsch to the collection.  I recently tried  a 6120 and, though I like the sounds, it doesn't feel familiar when you're used to Fenders.

Gretsch's definitely have there own feel, which is one of the things I like about them.

I acquired a 6120 a few year's ago and it certainly took some getting used to, especially the switching, but it sounds great and I now regularly use it live.

went to try out the gretsch today and although its a stunning looking guitar and plays well too i think it would end up being a 5 minute wonder or an expensive ornament. i did win £2.60 on the euro millions last night so if that happenend another 999 times i would probably go for it.
so on your advice phily Q i think i will be doing some lurking in the foreseeable future.
which now begs the question, what do i get for my 40th?

The shop I work in has a 2nd hand Orange G6120 in. Only appeared yesterday so I'm not sure if they've made a decision on pricing yet, but it's in great nick. Probably £1800-1900 at a guess.
