P90 size for Les Paul Deluxe
« on: July 25, 2013, 02:32:58 AM »
Hey all,
I am new to the board. Recently put a set of Rebal Yell's in one of my Les Paul's and am blown away. Harmonically great! Two of my friends did the same and are equally impressed. I am going to get some Mules for a 86' standard soon. Anyway, I might be purchasing a 70's LP Deluxe and want to know options for the mini humbuckers. Don't need the output of the RY's but would love something for blues-hard rock-metal. Would like to avoid routing for full size hums if possible. Cosmetically, either something with a chrome cover or the cream p90 style would seem to be the best for a cherry sunburst. Any advice??
Thank you in advance,
Russell

Hi and welcome! Those RYs are brilliant rock PUs, can never praise them enough.

On the count of P90s I think you got two main options: The Nantucket and the Supermassive. These two are quite different though and I suspect you would like the Nantucket better.
The NT is a classic P90, power growl and full old school P90 character. Great for anything blues and rock, born for those things. Depending on what kind of metal you do they should be able to handle that too, P90s have a way of keeping tighness and definition under gain which is amazing. After hearing some fast high gain solos played on a Manhattan neck (and trying to do so myself) I have no doubt that these things can go heavy. I think they are very similar to the MQs too and those really can go very heavy.

With the NT being the classic character choice the Supermassive is a slightly different take on the P90. While very much retaining the P90 we love it has a much more modern voicing. Also a quite a bit more low end, making its growl more guttural. This one is more for the hard rock and metal side of things, but still very versatile.

However if you are looking for a classic P90 sound that can do more and like the RYs the NT should be the ticket here for you. Little doubt in my mind on that.

Hey,
Thanks very much. I assume that both of those options will fit in the LP mini routes without any mods? The metal I play is not modern metal but old school in standard tuning so these sound great. Thanks again!

That I do not know as I have no clue how big the LP mini routes are. You can however go here https://bareknucklepickups.co.uk/main/dimensions.php and measure it yourself.
Or just shoot a quick mail to the insanely helpful BKP guys, maybe they can answer that question.

P-90s in standard soapbar-style covers should slot directly into the pickup cavities in your LP Deluxe.  You might have to drill some holes for the mounting screws, but that should be the only modification necessary.
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

Another possibility would be to have them rewired by BKP.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

I wonder if BKP would rewire the bridge pick-up or use the existing chrome cover setup? The p90's would not look as cool unless in a gold top or black LP IMO. Thanks for all the advice. Either way I will be purchasing new BKP's soon!
