I wasn't going to bother posting this... But then I realised I've done a lot of searching "headphone" threads on here in the last few days, so I probably ought to put something back in return
Just acquired a pair of "Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro (250 Ohm)" on the way home last night.
I've been using Sennheiser HD600 for mixing, guitar amp modellor listening, and general home headphone use for quite a few years.
When I switched to "headphone mixing" a few years back I ended up producing what I felt were some of my best mixes so far (home studio standards here ), and I've kinda come to rely on the HD600s as a "magic" part of the process. They've had a lot of use, and I've been dreading them conking out, so I've been watching headphone threads with interest for some months.
Unfortunately, one of the connector leads went intermittent last week(I DIY repaired the other one some time ago, but I really cannot be @rsed to do that again). So I've got replacement leads on the way, but "next day" delivery has turned into a "I'm terribly sorry sir, our suppliers, etc..."
So there's been a bit of a "oh no, long bank holiday, no reliable headphones - AGH!" panic this week.
I'd been intending to get some decent closed-back phones anyway, so now was the time.
On the basis of what I found on here and elsewhere, I narrowed it down to two: these beyerdynamics, and the audio-technica MA50 that gets a lot of love on here. For some reason, these just pipped it in my mind (although I'd like to get both ).
I picked them up last night, and on the way home I was filled with "oh no, have I f*cked up by ignoring the MDV recommendation/edict on MA50?" worries. But then I remembered that Roo is big on them as well, and he doesn't like Paul McCartney, so what does he know?

When I tried them out, it was "yeah, they'll do the job". So that was a relief. But they didn't seem nearly as "tasty" as the HD600s.
I was getting some stuff I didn't like as well - hard to describe, certain frequencies had some "unpleasantness" in places. So I downloaded some pink noise and gave that a go - must have been 6 hours or so in total by now. I wasn't convinced how effective this could be, but I am now!!
I've been using them on and off to listen to stuff online and on the pc this morning - so all mp3s and wmv, no wavs or recording studio stuff as yet - a
very enjoyable experience. And by that, I mean I can hear everything in a very flat and even way. I think I'll still prefer the HD600 for general listening pleasure, but I can see how some folk think that they (and the HD650) smooth out the top end too much.
I suspect that I'll be able to do better mixes with the 770s - I can hear a lot more detail in the top end without it being too harsh or bright. I'm noticing the loss/artifacts of mp3/wmv a lot more at the moment. And I've been listening to a fair amount of 60s Bee Gees this morning (which I have been doing since, erm, the 60s!), and for the first time ever I've noticed that they've got quite a sizable amount of "mouth noises" on the vocal tracks - something which always p1sses me off on my vocals.
And also, I now own closed-back phones I can use for tracking that do not rip the top end out of my hearing so much while I'm doing it!
I'd like to get some MA50 as well, but I'm a happy punter at the moment. (btw, research of the MA50 seemed to be implying that they're in a "getting replaced by a better model" situation at the moment - not sure if this really is the case, or whether it will be a "good thing" or not if true...)
Anyway, special thanks to MDV for all the knowledge he's dumped about this on these forums. I might not have gone for MA50, but the decisions about what I wanted and why have been possible because of the shared knowledge I found in here... :D
