C-pig or A-pig for custom mahogany flying V??
« on: September 08, 2012, 10:00:48 PM »
Hey all,

I'm building a guitar here at luthier school and I can't decide between C-pigs and A-pigs.  I love the sound clips and various youtube comparisons of the pigs, been dying to try the warpigs for several months!  It's going to be a mahogany body and set neck, flame maple top, ebony fingerboard, 25.5 scale flying V. I want a dark grindy sound.

http://soundcloud.com/trendkilltimmy  I've recorded 4 tracks (none finished tho), each song is a little different so hopefully that will give y'all some idea of what I'm going for. They were recorded with a Epi G-400 with either SD distortions (high end too shrill for me) or DiMarzio Dominions (not impressed with their harmonic response).  I'm very new to recording/mixing/editing and all that jazz, so I apologize if it sounds rough!  I will get better though    Thanks!

i have got both pickups in the same wood combination and, for what you want, i 'd choose cpig, it's more agressive and  the growly sound is more twested and full than the alnico version. As well as that, alnico version sounds ( dispite the graphic of the eq ) sweeter and brighter.
mensinger arcadia 7 with miracle man bridge and cold sweat neck
g & L legacy USA HB with bareknuckle alnico warpig and mother's milk neck and middle.
mayones regius 7 baritone custom with warpigs!

You'll get dark and grindy for sure.  I tried a c-pig in a neck through V (mahogany body, quilted maple top, maple neck, ebony fretboard) and found too much bass but it is a 7 string.  I found anything around E or D sounded really good but at B or A, too much bass for my liking.  I was after more 90's Fear Factory so didn't work out for me.  Good pick up though and great output.

Hmm, shite. I was planning on playing in B standard/drop A. So maybe a warpig would be too boomy? Any suggestions on a nice grindy, throaty, thick humbucker set then?

Tim recommended an Aftermath for me but I ended up with SD blackout 1's in it.  I'd email the guys and let them know what you want.  It didn't work for me but who's to say someone else would like it?

The warpigs definetly have a good chunk of low end even at standard tuning. The AWP especially if you de-tune it. I'd look at the Blackdog if your not too concerned about output. No experience though :(

C-Pig is my vote. Mahagony Vs are notoriously dark, as is the C-Pig. But I combined the two and cant be any happier. BKPs have such wide dynamic response that I have not had an issue getting solos to bite through beautifully and my low end sounds so epically crushing that I feel it would work well for your purposes. A combo made in heaven. Maple top will also add a bit to the high end, so you would get a nice grindy sound by my guess.
