how to tell chrome and nickel hardware apart...
« on: September 20, 2012, 02:25:46 PM »
I've just got some (supposedly) nickel Grovers off ebay and they look too shiny for nickel but I've got nothing to compare them against to be sure.  They didn't come with any packaging, they were supplied OEM-style.

Chrome has a blue-ish tinge to it, nickel is more grey.  Both can be very shiny so you can't use that alone.

Can you put up some pics?

i always think nickel is a bit yellow-ish.

but nickel can be definitely as shiny as chrome.. to begin with. try some mild acid to see if they dull a bit?

I could tell easily if I could see them, not that that helps!

As the guys have said, chrome is blue-white like a mirror, nickel is more yellowish and goes grey when it tarnishes.

If they're the mini (six per side type) Grovers I don't think they're available in nickel.  The big three-per-side ones are available in both nickel and chrome.

They're the big ones.

Suppose time will tell - should tarnish pretty easily after a month.

Agree with Dave here, chrome has a slight blue color to it.

9 times out of 10 I prefer nickel
