Steve, if subtracting 17.5% gives you the price before VAT then VAT must be 21%. VAT is charged at 17.5% of the pre-VAT cost, and 17.5% of X is less than 17.5% of 1.175X.

I think it works like this:

For example if a pickup is £100 then with UK vat it will cost £117.50.

That is 17.5% increase in price which equal to 100 x 1.175 or as a formula

n x 1.175 = including tax price.

To remove the tax you do not remove 17.5% from the new price £117.50 because 17.5% of £117.50 is £20.56 rather than what it should be of £17.50.

So to achieve the original price ( excluding vat ) you need to divide by the same amount. which is 117.50 / 1.175 = 100 or as a forumla

n / 1.175 = excluding tax price.

Just to clarify, it is 17.5% you are getting off the price, 17.5% in reference to the original price, not the after tax price.

I hoped that helped :D

I'm sure you must have a good understanding of physics though! I've been getting lessons off Trev at Tipton Amps - well he's explained roughly how valves work etc.

^i thought physics was similar to maths, mr pig! :D

anyway, just to point out that i'm not being a smartass or anything bringing the whole 14.9% versus 17.5% thing up, I only realised that there was a difference recently- I think I recommended BK's to someone on HC, and I said they could take 17.5% off, and someone else corrected me!

To summarise:

- dave_mc is correct with his 14.9% to REMOVE VAT from a price.
- as Tim said, the shop automatically removes VAT if you are outside the EU so you don't have to worry.
- physics doesn't HAVE to be about maths. There are two levels to phyics; an understanding of theory without maths, but by using analogies etc, or an understanding with maths.

Hope that cleans up this thread! :-)

^cheers, ol! :D

true about the physics thing, too- my sister always did better in physics than maths, and i was vice-versa, for some strange reason!
