Apache bridge in the neck or middle?
« on: October 22, 2012, 02:14:39 PM »
So I'm thinking of swapping some of my pickups around to see what different tones I can get without actually buying any new ones.

Any ideas what an Apache bridge model would sound like in the neck of an alder bodied Strat type guitar? I realise it wouldn't match like it would as part of a calibrated set, and would be darker and hotter than the standard neck model - but in isolation, it's still a fairly low output single coil and could possibly sound good in its own right...

Thoughts?

It would sound great - there is no magic in it being labelled 'bridge' except it is wound hotter to cut the ice pickiness that can affect lower value wound bridge pickups.  In any event there is evidence from comparing lots of vintage strats that in the  50s and early 60s Fender seem to have had a preference for putting a slightly hotter pickup in the neck, which suited the music of the day (such as for rock and roll rhythym or western swing), so its all a matter of fashion and what you like.
